. . . this really needs to be done, with all the nonsense they’re pulling. Sophistry at its finest.

Should be …“nominally Christian, previously Catholic University”

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Ora Pro Nobis Peccatoribus!

I think the Catholic Church views are so contradictory. What happend to a sin is a sin. The church wants to focus so much on abortion but what about all of the molestation going on, drinking, gambling, etc. The sin of abortion is no different that of these other sins. There’s no such thing as a venial or moral sin. ALL SIN IS SIN.

If you think all sin is equally evil, then you should also believe you’ll go to hell for doing 65 mph in a 55 mph zone. And you say you’re Catholic?

Take your venom elsewhere.

Well, yes, there is actually a difference between venial and mortal sins. The Church has never taught that a “sin is a sin.”

1John5 said:
16 If anyone sees his brother sinning, if the sin is not deadly, he should pray to God and he will give him life. This is only for those whose sin is not deadly. There is such a thing as deadly sin, about which I do not say that you should pray. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that is not deadly.

As St. John explains, only prayer is necessary to be forgiven IF the sin isn’t deadly. If you want to know how to be reconciled with God for a deadly sin, talk to a priest.

The other sins you mention - molestation, drinking and gambling (to excess that is) - are serious sins and can be mortal. However, society has laws against or at least preventing the abuse of those sins. Not so for abortion anymore. That is why the Church speaks so clearly about that issue. Until our society reverses course and ends the practice of abortion, in the same manner that slavery was ended, the Church has a duty to speak out.

In the view of the Church, abortion is very close to equal with murder.

Mortal sin is in the Bible;

*If any one sees his brother committing what is not a mortal sin, he will ask, and God * will give him life for those whose sin is not mortal. * 1 John 5:16

Correction: I am a former Catholic. No longer am I asleep if you dont know what that means, “ignorant”. Going to hell for doing the wrong speed limit? Come on, stop being childish. What I’m saying is how come the Church likes to talk about the sin of abortion and not focus on the other sins, such as DRINKING, WHICH LEADS TO DRUNKENESS. Are you saying that a person that has an abortion is more of a sinner than one who gets drunk, or one who has premaritial sex, commits molestation, etc.? If so you seriously need to WAKE UP!!!

You need to calm down. Read the biblical passage that both I and irishpatrick sited. Some sin is deadly. Drinking alcohol is not as terrible a sin as murder. Certainly, premarital sex, while a grave and most likely mortal sin, is not as terrible a sin as murder. Even molestation, as terrible as it is, is not as terrible as murder.

For you to consider the taking of an unborn human life as equal to other, lesser sins is very disturbing. We are all sinners, but some sins are “deadly” as St. John says. I suggest you pray about it.

Then, you would have to strip the name “Catholic” from about 98% of the remaining Catholic universities. I don’ think that would be healthy. You may not care for ND, but they have maintained more fidelity to the faith than 98% of the other Catholic universities in this nation.

…and National “Catholic” Review… I wish we had a copyright or something to stop these gnostics from using it.

That is not saying much…either you are faithful to the gospel and the magesterium or you are not…and they are not

“Catholic” is not a copyrighted brand name, so who you gonna sue?

DRINKING is not a sin…unless you’d like to accuse Jesus himself, buddy.

This is unbelievably dumb of you.

Disagree all you like with their policies. But Notre Dame is as Catholic as they come.

You guys have reduced Catholicism to a spiritual sect of people who think just like you.

That’s kind of the idea. For the record, the debate on whether ND should remain a nominally Catholic school has been going on for years. It didn’t start this week. I think that they do un-catholic things but their history shows that they have certainly cleaned up their act from decades past.

ND has Catholics, yet it is not Catholic. Many state colleges have Catholics, they even have Priests and spiritual direction and confession available, yet they are not Catholic either. ND is now a secular school using the Catholic name to further its money-based agenda.

Sorry, but there is a growing sense of “enough is enough” among Catholics who actually care about the faith. Places like ND should be beacons of light for everyone, not darkness as it is.

Yes we all think God meant it when He said Thou Shall not kill…We still believe the 10 commandments are rules for how we conduct our lives

i don’t see anything dumb about mark77’s post. your post was very mean spirited i think.

it doesn’t appear that notre dame is as catholic as they come. it might appear catholic from all outside appearances, but, obviously, the issue before us now is causing people to wonder how catholic the university is.

you seem to have a dislike of catholics or the catholic religion.
