Strip Club Outreach

For a short time, our city had people going around to strip club/porn shop parking lots and photographing the cars in the lots. A quick DMV search of the lisence plate (probably on the web now), and those photographs were sent to the owner’s home…perhaps to the wife, mother, etc.

Not sure if it is legal anymore, but it sure empties the parking lot quick, although it takes a lot of time and energy.

A strip club outreach would probably be best done by women. Sending most men to a stripclub to evangelize them would be like taking a recovering alcoholic into a bar. Paul wrote against sexual sin. He didn’t tell us to preach to sexual deviants in the middle of an orgy. There’s too much temptation there. I’m single, but if I were married I’m sure the wife would love to hear me say “Hey honey, I’m goin’ down to the strip club ministry. I’ll only be five hours. After that I’m hittin’ the mud wrestling ministry. Love ya hun!!!” That would go over well.
man, i was thinking the same thing.

the difference between strip clubs and abortion clinics is people don’t become addicted to abortions (at least i don’t think they do…) as we are advised in the Word:

1* Brothers, even if a person is caught in some transgression, you who are spiritual should correct that one in a gentle spirit, looking to yourself, so that you also may not be tempted.*

again, someone else said it above - we are called to avoid the near occasion of sin, especially if you know that is a stronghold for you.

The men could still go pray outside…men on their way in seeing other men resist temptation by prayer would be a great testimony. If they just saw women they might dismiss them as a bunch of fem-nazis or something. Also the point that it shouldn’t be something that you yourself have a problem with. If you are addicted to such things and want to help someone else who shares the problem you talk to them else where, in a safe place.

However I agree when it comes to one-to-one counseling and it would be best to go woman-to-woman.

Agreed. One of the awful stereotypes out there is that all men love strippers and are vulnerable to temptation by it. In fact there are many men who feel nothing but rank shame embarrassment at such things.

Actually, there are stories from the sayings of the desert fathers (among the first generation of Christian monks–primarily in Egypt in the 4th and 5th centuries) of monks giving into temptation, going into the city, and finding a ‘house of illrepute.’ In at least one of the stories, another monk decided to accompany his wayward brother and pray for him all along the way. His prayers were eventually answered and his fellow monk saw the error of his ways and returned to his life of prayer in the desert.

There are other stories of prostitutes from that time undergoing conversions and going to the desert to live the ascetic life there.

So, anyway, there seems to be a long tradition of such spiritual outreach.

There is an anti-porn Christian group (XXX Church) that has started having church services on the Las Vegas Strip to target strip club-goers – it’s called “Strip Church” (no joke). If I’m not mistaken, the group even does strip club outreach. I know they help porn actresses get out of the industry and turn their lives around.

There’s no way I could be part of ministries like that. Even if my wife were with me the whole time, I would be like a recovering alcoholic in a liquor store.
