Stroke forces Archbishop of Liverpool to retire

Archbishop Patrick Kelly of Liverpool, UK, has announced his intention to retire following the stroke he had last month.

While the archbishop, who turns 75 (the age for a bishops retirement under Canon Law) in November, continues to recover well, he will not be restarting his pastoral engagements.

It is sad that Archbishop Kelly suffered such a terrible medical condition. Strokes can cause devastating injury, even death. I am gladdened to read that he is recovering well, and pray that he have few (if any) permanent impairments.

I hope a candidate to replace him will be found quickly, and that the new archbishop is able to follow up on the good work which Archbishop Kelly has provided.
