Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) preached the doctrine of Islam 1100 years after Buddhism had flourished, and his preaching bears close affinity to the noble doctrine of the Buddha. Let me dwell at length how Al-Quran makes indirect allusion to the Buddha in Surah XCV: 1, 2 & 3. (Tin or Fig) and footnote Al-Quran 6198.

“By the Fig and the Olive and Mount Sinai and the City of Security, we have indeed created man in the best of mould. Then we do abase him (to be) the lowest of low.”
The Muslim theologians attribute meanings to the verses as follows: The Olive here bears reference to the Mount of Olives just outside the walls of the city of Jerusalem, thus symbolising Christianity; Mount Sinai was the mountain in which the law was given to Moses, symbolising Judaism. The City of Security refers to Mecca.

So Mount Of Olives refer to Christianity and Christ: Mount Sinai for Judaism and Moses; Mecca for Islam and Muhammad. But what about the Fig? It is the belief of the Islamic theologians that since the last three symbols refer to prophets and religions, the symbol Fig should also refer to a prophet and a religion.

Buddhism being the most populace living religion of the world during the advent of prophet Muhammad and the Bodhi tree being the one under which Siddharta Gautama received Enlightenment, Quranic commentators legitimately connect the Bodhi tree to the Fig tree, and hence infer that the symbol Fig refers to the Buddha and Buddhism.

I heard Muslims saying Buddha was a prophet, or could have been a prophet. I don’t know how it squares with Islam as the emphasis of buddhism is on the self, not God, thou Islam shares something of this belief by stressing the human works as a way to salvation in my opinion, which is open for correction.

It would be safer to assume Sufism has more in common with Buddhism than mainstream Islam. Most Muslims consider the dervish (Sufi practitioner) as heretics.

Most Muslims i know consider Buddha a ‘great teacher’ but not better than Musa, Isa or Mohammad. In other words, he’s just another ‘kafir’ to them.

How many people did Buddha kill, or enslave, in order to make people follow him?

He also did not take other’s teachings and rewrite them in order to fit his agenda.

The one major difference between Islam and Buddhism is the thoughts about suffering. It is an internal way to avoid suffering, but also the realization that suffering is in this world. It seems to me that Muslims make people suffer and don’t even try to alleviate it. Their Quran tells them to ‘strike terror’. Buddhism doesn’t divide the world up into the ‘lands of war’ vs the ‘lands of Buddha’! And if the people don’t convert they don’t tell them to subjugate them and humiliate them daily. And we don’t get the deception from Buddhists about Buddhism like we get from Islam.

The more I think about it Islam’s teachings are more Communistic, or fascist, than Buddhist.

They don’t tell their men followers to beat up their wives either.

I don’t know, I just don’t see the similarities. Even the Sufism that one mentioned they still follow Muhammed who taught some pretty nasty stuff and although they interpret it to be more peaceful the base teachings are not very similar.

I do not know if Buddhism has a book such as the Quran or the Bible. If anyone knows then feel free to let me know.

Thanks.

Buddha was a Messenger of God …
God sent Prophets to all nations . Holy Quran does not mention all names . So , Buddha might or might not be a Messenger of God.

Ahimsa: Strong Similarities between Buddhism and Islam

If Buddha taught his followers to worship one God only , don’t take deity besides God , don’t make statue for worship etc etc , yes then surely strong Similarities are there between Buddhism and Islam 🙂

Their Quran tells them to ‘strike terror’.
Hi

Kindly quote just one verse, the harshest one, from Quran with the connecte five preceding verses and five following verses to understand the context to support your clain. You won’t find any.

Thanks

Hi

There is no mainstream Islam mentioned by name in Quran/Islam/Muhammad. Every group which is supported truthfully by Quran and Sunnah is the right one. Truth knows no concept of majority or minority, it is truth absolute.

Thanks

Fig and Olive are symbols of Christianity. Ancient symbols.

Hi

The great teacher is what is a Messenger Prophet. I think Jesus was also called a teacher.

All Messengers Prophets are on the same platform of truth as far as their selected from God Allah is concerned and they do the sam job to convey the Message from God Allah to the humanity, they have been sent to.

In that sense there is no difference between Buddha, Krishna, Socrates,Jesus ,Moses,Zoroaster and Second Coming 1835-1908; that should be understood.

One has to accept all the Messengers, missing none, as they have been sent from One On High. Denial of even one Messenger would be considered denial of all the Messengers; to choose one from the Messengers is therefore incorrect.

This is explained in Quran, if you have ever read it. it is better that you start reading Quran so that you may enjoy the discussion usefully. It is very easy; not difficult at all. One may start it from today if one has not done it before, in my opinion.

I love Buddha and Krishna as I do love Jesus and Mary.

Thanks

Do you tell that to your violent ones before they went and blow up people in Mumbai, or in Pakistan, or in Israel? To quote the previous and following verses so they understand the Quran? A lot of effort on a lot of muslims parts to make sure we think it means peace when there is NO effort to do the same to its own followers. You know very well you are doing dawah and following your Quran to confuse us.

Quran 8:12: “Instill terror into the hearts of the unbelievers;”

Ok, it was ‘instill’ instead of ‘strike’.

How about this one - I cut/pasted it from another post:

9:29
Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the Religion of Truth, from among the People of the Book, until they pay the Jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued

9:30 And the Jews say: Ezra is the son of Allah, and the Christians say: The Messiah is the son of Allah. That is their saying with their mouths. They imitate the saying of those who disbelieved of old. Allah (Himself) fighteth against them. How perverse are they!

It doesn’t mention war time, nor do I know of any country that subdues people like this one suggests to do. And the 9:30 says we are perverse if we don’t think Allah is God. This also tells me that Muslims are trying to force us into submitting to their Allah. And tells them to be judgemental against us (prejudiced): ‘How perverse are they!’.

Now we both know that Muhammad attacked caravans that had women and children along and who were either unarmed or barely armed. How is that like Buddha? Muhammad, and his followers, had so many slaves that no one really knows how many he had and he got them because he killed their husbands, or men relatives. Some of the wives he took were from these raids and battles after killing their husbands, or men relatives off.

I just don’t see the similarities between Buddhism and Islam. It goes to the base teachings of each. I will admit that I am not as well versed in Buddhism to know everything. I don’t see it as being an imperialistic movement, a religion that forced people to either accept it or die and/or accept subjugation, or one that went after loot and people for slavery. If I am wrong about the slavery part in Buddhism please enlighten me as I am totally unaware of it. But I am not wrong about the slavery part in Islam. And I apologize ahead of time.

Hi

Kindly just select one verse, which you think is the most objectionable or the most harsh one. We will all discuss it here. Please don’t go around and around, then it will be difficult to understand usefully. Please quote such verse with the context as mentioned earlier.

Please don’t discuss politics here, it will mak the things complicated and you would be confused; leave it for the politicians and Media, we discuss here religions and faiths and their comparative study.

I love Buddha and Krishna as I do love Jesus and Mary

Thanks

I consider both the Sunni and Shi’a as mainstream Islam. The others are sectarian groups which the Qu’ran does mention (although not by name).

You forgot to add Mohammad and Mirza Ghulam to that list if you wish to be fair.

Christians do not deny there were biblical messengers before Christ. We just do not think messengers from other religions are significant or relevant to our religion.

I own a copy of the Qu’ran and i’ve read it. Some surah’s make moral sense, but for the most part, its pretty tribalistic and elitist. God of the Bible is not tribal and elite. He loves all and embraces everyone, regardless of language, skin colour, age, nationality and gender.

Islam is politics. You tell me where the politics end and the religion begins when you have countries that have sharia laws.

I quote from one of the 5 accepted translations. You do not have to retranslate in order to make your koran sound better. This is a new tactic that you are taking to try to make us think that the koran isn’t as violent as it is.
