No, it was charity.Rather harsh message don’t ya think?

There are many modern day Herods and Herodias’ who will stop at nothing to silence people of faith for their convictions.John the Baptist got beheaded for calling sin sin. I don’t remember Jesus saying he shouldn’t have been so direct with Herod.
I’m sure the pews are filled with this message coming out. Don’t misunderstand me here to say the church to absolve all its values in order to become popular, but people need to be in the seats in order to hear the message. Our church could do a much better job of reaching out to the LGBT community rather than what it appears to do which is demonize them. There is a tactful way to approach this and maybe the priest did it maybe he didn’t, but I do know from my own experience that I have felt unwelcome in many parishes. Unfortunately much of that doesn’t come from the clergy, but rather fellow parishioners. No, it was charity.
We only have one side of the story. It seems this student had some type of relationship with the priest. The priest did not walk up to a stranger and state boldly he was immoral. It seems the priest, out of charity, told the student he was headed in the wrong direction. The student, of course, wants to keep doing what he is doing, so he views the warning as an insult. The truth is no matter how it is stated it will be hated because one must give up sin.I’m sure the pews are filled with this message coming out. This objectively misses the point. Regardless of what happened in this case because none of us were there. It seems clear to me the Catholic church could do a better job ministering to the LGBT community. I am not alone in this position as recently Cardinal Dolan said the exact same thing. It seems Catholics being so loud on SSM and condemning homosexuality misses a great opportunity for pastoral ministrations. I am not along amongst gay catholics that have felt alienated from the church. We only have one side of the story. It seems this student had some type of relationship with the priest. Simply have better outreach to the gay community. Must we start the dialogue with them being sinners? It seems counterproductive to the message of Christ.Truth is hate to those who hate the truth.
What exactly would you have the Church do?

What does ‘better outreach’ mean? Any dialogue the church will have with the ‘gay community’ eventually will come around to homosexual activity being sinful. If there were a group of straight people who had sex outside marriage that wanted the church to have ‘better outreach’ with them, the same thing would happen. The church’s message is ‘repent, turn away from sin and towards Christ’. That is necessary to be a part of the sacramental life of the church.Simply have better outreach to the gay community. Christ said to Repent. Not enough anymore?Simply have better outreach to the gay community. Must we start the dialogue with them being sinners? It seems counterproductive to the message of Christ.
But the priest met with the students involved and must have spent some time talking with them about all this. They just didn’t like what he had to say.Simply have better outreach to the gay community. Must we start the dialogue with them being sinners? It seems counterproductive to the message of Christ.
Yeah I don’t really understand the point the other poster is making. We’re all sinners. That’s the starting point for everything, really.Christ said to Repent. Not enough anymore?

“God loves you. Are you loving Him?”
Chances are, you’re not. Count me among those who fail to love Him sufficiently too.
Do you want the Church to start the dialogue with “God is OK with whatever you’re doing”? Because that’s not ever going to happen. Christ and John the Baptist before Him preached repentance to all the people. Not “do whatever, God loves you anyway so there’s no reason to repent.”
Yeah, of course God loves you anyway. But failure to repent demonstrates that you don’t love Him. We all struggle. Some with some pretty dark stuff. Me too. The only thing I’ve got going for me is that I don’t deny my sin or ask anyone to declare that sin to no longer be sin. That’s about it.![]()
You’d think from the comments on here though people do have all the answers. This isn’t meant to be an attact I respect everyone even if I don’t agree with you, rather its just a mere observation. To talk about God and what He wants from us has to start with humility on our part. We don’t know all the answers like He does!
It’s not realistic to believe that active homosexuals want to be reached out to, except on their terms, which would be to condone their behaviors.Originally Posted by stlcatholic86

We must be careful not to fall into moral relativism. You’d think from the comments on here though people do have all the answers. This isn’t meant to be an attact I respect everyone even if I don’t agree with you, rather its just a mere observation.
