John the Baptist got beheaded for calling sin sin. I don’t remember Jesus saying he shouldn’t have been so direct with Herod.
There are many modern day Herods and Herodias’ who will stop at nothing to silence people of faith for their convictions.

No, it was charity.
I’m sure the pews are filled with this message coming out. Don’t misunderstand me here to say the church to absolve all its values in order to become popular, but people need to be in the seats in order to hear the message. Our church could do a much better job of reaching out to the LGBT community rather than what it appears to do which is demonize them. There is a tactful way to approach this and maybe the priest did it maybe he didn’t, but I do know from my own experience that I have felt unwelcome in many parishes. Unfortunately much of that doesn’t come from the clergy, but rather fellow parishioners.

We only have one side of the story. It seems this student had some type of relationship with the priest. The priest did not walk up to a stranger and state boldly he was immoral. It seems the priest, out of charity, told the student he was headed in the wrong direction. The student, of course, wants to keep doing what he is doing, so he views the warning as an insult. The truth is no matter how it is stated it will be hated because one must give up sin.

This objectively misses the point. Regardless of what happened in this case because none of us were there. It seems clear to me the Catholic church could do a better job ministering to the LGBT community. I am not alone in this position as recently Cardinal Dolan said the exact same thing. It seems Catholics being so loud on SSM and condemning homosexuality misses a great opportunity for pastoral ministrations. I am not along amongst gay catholics that have felt alienated from the church.

Would it not be better , to join the rest of humanity in The Church who asks - how would I try to help God’s Family , to be free from the hold of the enemy …so that more persons can recieve The Father love the way He intended …so that life itself is seen as His mercy , to be lived with truth and gratitude , that rejecting truths about that life is rejecting HIs mercy .

As Fr.Serpa of C.A often reminds , meditating on His Passion and the many other means to live lives of holiness and recognising how repentance is a gift of the Holy Spirit , to be recieved with gratitude , not as threats to one’s ideas / identity , that the knots of life can be entrusted to a loving powerful Mother - hope we get to see many who would quietly yet powerfully reclaim minds and hearts for The Lord and His Mother , for all the joy and peace that would bring , not just for this life either !

Truth is hate to those who hate the truth.

What exactly would you have the Church do?

Simply have better outreach to the gay community. Must we start the dialogue with them being sinners? It seems counterproductive to the message of Christ. 🤷

When I read this on yahoo earlier, I was pleasantly surprised to see how many comments expressed support for the priest/ school. 👍

If you ever read yahoo comments, you know there is no shortage of anti Catholic sentiment.

Kind of shows that people see the foolishness of the students.

2Timothy4:1-5

1 Before God and before Christ Jesus who is to be judge of the living and the dead, I charge you, in the name of his appearing and of his kingdom:

2 proclaim the message and, welcome or unwelcome, insist on it. Refute falsehood, correct error, give encouragement – but do all with patience and with care to instruct.

** 3 The time is sure to come when people will not accept sound teaching, but their ears will be itching for anything new and they will collect themselves a whole series of teachers according to their own tastes;

4 and then they will shut their ears to the truth** and will turn to myths.

5 But you must keep steady all the time; put up with suffering; do the work of preaching the gospel; fulfil the service asked of you.

What does ‘better outreach’ mean? Any dialogue the church will have with the ‘gay community’ eventually will come around to homosexual activity being sinful. If there were a group of straight people who had sex outside marriage that wanted the church to have ‘better outreach’ with them, the same thing would happen. The church’s message is ‘repent, turn away from sin and towards Christ’. That is necessary to be a part of the sacramental life of the church.

But the priest met with the students involved and must have spent some time talking with them about all this. They just didn’t like what he had to say.
It would be interesting to get his viewpoint on what happened.

Christ said to Repent. Not enough anymore?
Yeah I don’t really understand the point the other poster is making. We’re all sinners. That’s the starting point for everything, really.

“God loves you. Are you loving Him?”

Chances are, you’re not. Count me among those who fail to love Him sufficiently too.

Do you want the Church to start the dialogue with “God is OK with whatever you’re doing”? Because that’s not ever going to happen. Christ and John the Baptist before Him preached repentance to all the people. Not “do whatever, God loves you anyway so there’s no reason to repent.”

Yeah, of course God loves you anyway. But failure to repent demonstrates that you don’t love Him. We all struggle. Some with some pretty dark stuff. Me too. The only thing I’ve got going for me is that I don’t deny my sin or ask anyone to declare that sin to no longer be sin. That’s about it. 🤷

👍 To talk about God and what He wants from us has to start with humility on our part. We don’t know all the answers like He does!

You’d think from the comments on here though people do have all the answers. This isn’t meant to be an attact I respect everyone even if I don’t agree with you, rather its just a mere observation.

It’s not realistic to believe that active homosexuals want to be reached out to, except on their terms, which would be to condone their behaviors.
I do wish all Catholic dioceses and universities would offer the Courage apostolate.

We must be careful not to fall into moral relativism.

(my observation 🙂 )
