Students try to banish Catholic chaplain from campus for anti-gay stance

Legacy and Bergen say they are primarily upset about the counseling Shaffer offers. They say he urges students who have homosexual feelings to lead a life of celibacy.

Catholic Church doctrine maintains that homosexual desire isn’t a sin, but acting on that desire is, according to the website Catholic.com.

Legacy told the Hatchet that he spent considerable time at the Newman Center during his first two years at George Washington. He was an altar server at mass. He believed that he would become a Catholic priest after graduating.

Right. He’s causing them “mental conflict”. There is nothing charitable that I can say, so I won’t post what I think.
 
Their complaint makes absolutely no sense. The priest isn’t saying anything unexpected. They can simply avoid the Newman Center if they don’t want his advice anymore. And as Seniors (who presumably will graduate in a month or two), why should their problem with the priest be considered more strongly than that of other students? GW has had a Newman Center for forever and this has never been an issue before.

Sheesh.
 
I think GWU has a Muslim Chaplain. I doubt that chaplain would tell homosexual students who come to him that acting on homosexual behavior is morally acceptable yet the students are not trying to banish that chaplain

It just goes to show you the inordinate amount of hate leveled at he Catholic Church and her representatives these days. If it were an Imam who has said that to a student, Faculty and administrators at GWU would be hesitant to say anything, less they incur any accusations of religious intolerance or being overly critical of Islamic theology and moral guidance. Yet a Catholic priest only says what’s in line with established Catholic doctrine, and they try and “crucify him”. It’s a shame this is taking place in our institutions of higher education.
 
I don’t think this Priest deserves the treatment he is receiving from these students. After all his teaching is consistent with the church’s position on the faith. It’s just fighting intolerance with intolerance. I think the clergy, this Priest included, could definitely have approached this situation better. As Catholics in general I think we ought to have more compassion and less judgment. How do you think these students might have responded if the Priest would have said instead “God still loves you, I still love you, and you are still welcome in the communion of the Catholic Church.” and then go on to tell them “acting on homosexuality is not consistent with the teaching of the catholic church.” I think people would be less put off by such approach because it acknowledges the reality of people. Instead I feel as the Priest just put a big disclaimer on the “all our welcome” sign of the church and that shouldn’t be our message.

It’s also from last May. - Sorry, the original story is from May. I guess it took the two guys a year to come up with a plan.

Granted it’s not a direct quote, but still if that was the message…
 
I think he put it a bit harshly but there aren’t really alot of ways to put our doctrine without offending someone. This is not right. I will pray for all those involved.

Exactly. Did Jesus not promise us that we would be persecuted for speaking the truth? There should be no surprise about this. It’s the Church vs the world…always has been, always will be.

The two gay seniors are also unhappy about a blog post Shaffer authored back in May 2012, just after President Barack Obama publicly endorsed gay marriage.

That is according to Legacy. I doubt the priest came out and said that specifically. That may indeed have been his message though - since it is valid in this case.

What if Damian Legacy had a heterosexual liaison with a married or unmarried woman? The chaplain would still remind him of his immoral behavior. So now Catholic chaplains are to be muzzled? If it’s a gay sin, say nothing. Any other sins, say whatever you want.

It really depends…perhaps he does lack faith and the priest was able to pick up on that. None of us were involved in their conversations or possible confessions, so how can we say what really happened?

Legacy told Shaffer that he and Bergen had entered a homosexual relationship. Shaffer allegedly charged Legacy with being immoral and lacking in faith.

professing to be Catholic and being altar servers and believed he would become a priest, yet entered into a homosexual relationship.

Ok, so they are trying to get a priest removed for counseling them with proper Catholic teaching. :confused:
