March 1, 2010 (CNSNews) – A new study concludes that women at Catholic colleges are more promiscuous than their peers at secular colleges, raising new alarms about the state of Catholic higher education.

Another study finds that colleges with strong “moral communities” have a positive influence on students’ religious practice — but Catholic colleges generally lack clarity about the Catholic faith and have the same impact on Catholic students as do public universities.

“The evidence is clear: there is a serious crisis in much of Catholic higher education, and the consequences are real for Catholic families,” said Patrick J. Reilly, President of The Cardinal Newman Society, a watchdog organization for Catholic education. “We need to pay more attention to those Catholic colleges that are consistently faithful as models for the renewal of Catholic education.”

Overall, the study found clear differences in the sexual activity of Catholic students who attend weekly Mass. Whereas 24 percent of Catholic women who attend Mass weekly have “hooked up” (compared to 38 percent of nonreligious students), the rate more than doubles to 50 percent of Catholic women who attend Mass infrequently — far more than their nonreligious peers.
24 and 38 percent are high percentages, but are likely good indicators of the great social pressure to conform to this kind of behavior on behalf of all female students. It testifies to the relative success that building stronger connections to a moral community has in enabling resistance the pressure by at least some of the girls.

50 percent however indicates a willful rebellion against the teachings of their Church. Since it is significantly higher than even the secular norm, it is not just succumbing to the usual social pressures that is at play here. Instead, it would seem that these women are struggling with, and fighting against the morality they grew up with, almost hysterically so.

Of course to the extent that virtually every woman that engages in such sexual behavior will eventually regret having done so—female sexuality cannot be satisfied through emulating male sexual norms after all— even so, there is cause for hope in these higher numbers. When all sense of dignity and worth is destroyed through such behavior (and hopefully the girls’ lives are not irreparably destroyed in the meantime), this is the story of the prodigal son. Rebellion against the truth that they are rejecting will inevitably lead to disillusionment and the desire to come home. Sleeping with pigs has that kind of effect on anybody.

We can only hope that their Church will be rushing alongside the Father to greet them with open arms when they do return.

Pish Posh. Isn’t so at real Catholic colleges and universities. :). I’ve seen the gals wearing skirts with a hem line at their ankles!

Im not surprised. My brother goes to a Jesuit university and the stories he tells will make many of you stunned. I mean one class at his Jesuit university required viewing the Vagina Monologues for a passing grade.

:gopray: is the very first this I think of when I read this. It cannot be surprising but can be shocking to be reminded what kind of a war the enemy has initiated and who it can temporarily make guilty of sins against God.

In other words, the reality which is God’s forgiveness will prevail. Pray for these young men and women who have faltered.

If parochial schools are not working correctly in teaching our children the catholic faith how are we going to expect for them to reach university and change their bad habits. We need to teach morality and the catholic faith to children since they are toddlers.

It is not the school or the church we as parents need to teach them. The school is there to reinforce what we teach at home. Because we have had rely so much in school teaching our kids morality is the reason why our youngster behave the way they are behaving.

Parents often think that sending them to a Catholic college or university is still going to do the work for them…

The problem with many College students is their lack of knowledge about their catholic faith. It was not taught to them while growing up and they have a lot of misconceptions about what is what they really believe. Children and Young adults should be taught their faith and what the catholic church believe and the difference between our religion and the things of the world.

It can be very confusing out there… But the teaching has to start at home.

Your hemline isn’t what counts; it’s what’s in your mind. A virtuous young woman can wear them high or low and still be virtuous.

I’ve always been amused that Catholic girls at Catholic high schools in Brooklyn, NY tend to wear their skirts with the hemline above their knees whereas the Jewish girls at the Yeshivas wear them below the knee. My wife has also observed that some of the Catholic girls wear the skirts at acceptable levels in school, but pull them up after 3 o’clock. 😃

Haha. Typical liberal. By that standard, a nude woman can walk around and still be virtuous.

Obviously, Mr. Rich, you haven’t been to the awesome Catholic colleges this country has to offer. 😉 Look up Christendom…or perhaps Franciscan University. At schools like that, Catholic is the very air you breathe. Of course that doesn’t mean there isn’t some corruption. That’s just the world we live in. But I know most of the students really try to be great students…and great Catholics. And those who don’t share the religion, have a hard time of not following in their peers shoes.

God Bless 🙂

It’s a cliche in popular culture that Catholic girls are ‘wilder’. Just something I got from watching trashy films and such.

Oh, yeah, sure. My daughter went to Christendom, and I didn’t notice that the students were any different from those elsewhere - nor did my daughter who commented to me once that the girls there were as boy-crazy as other girls. Did your children go there? At least I know what I’m talking about.

Typically correct liberal, that is. 👍

Since when is virtue dependent on the amount of clothes that a woman wears? Haven’t you heard the story of Lady Godiva? Did she lose her virtue when she rode that horse in the nude?

Women were once required to go swimming in the ocean wearing almost as many clothes as they did on the streets. How did they come to lose their virtue when they went to one-piece bathing suits?

Were Catholic women less virtuous during World War II when skirts were worn short than in the 50s when they wore them longer?

Typical priggish conservative. 😦

Oh, yes. The St. Trinian’s series that were based on the cartoons by Ronald Searle. Trashy to some extent, but very funny IMO. 😃

With all due respect, this is ambiguous (boy-crazy?) and anecdotal. Did your daughter say more than half of her female acquaintances were sexually active? Even then, could she possibly speak to the chastity of the whole female population there?

Because according to a Zogby study, 56% of college students are sexually active, and according to a CDC survey, 79.5% of college student respondents had engaged in intercourse. I think the suggestion that Christendom is more or less the same warrants some further investigation.

She said boy-crazy, not sexually active. She didn’t doubt the virtue of the girls she knew, but even at that school there could have been some sexually active students.

I made no such suggestion,

*So…does this mean that they are sleeping with male students at Catholic universities? Are we only concerned with girls’ chastity, and not male students? One could assume that they are sleeping with males that go to the same Catholic universities, which would mean we should be concerned with male students attending such universities being promiscuous also…no? My point being–why doesn’t the title state…’‘female and male students are more promiscous at Catholic universities?’’ *

*FABULOUS post. I was thinking of typing a similiar reply…but you have covered it all. Excellent post. My two nephews attended Catholic schools all through high school, and the one is a self proclaimed atheist now, and the other doesn’t ever set foot in a Catholic Church. Catholic school should be SUPPLEMENTAL to what they learn or have learned at home…if they aren’t learning much about the faith at home, and mom and dad just want junior or juniorette to go through the motions of being a good Catholic, then this is the byproduct. Kids who become adults who have no idea what their faith is about, how to defend it, and how to live a moral life. *

And we should be every bit as concerned about males sleeping around at these schools, as we should females. I don’t like the double standard being subtly implicated here. (no offense to you thereseozi…you didn’t conduct the study!!) 😛 I would be just as outraged to find out my son is sleeping around in college, as I would if my daughter was.
