Homosexuality and the Church Crisis

Abstract: Due to clergy sex abuse scandals centered primarily in the Northern hemisphere, the
moral authority of the Roman Catholic Church has been subjected to an opportunistic siege by
prominent individuals and organizations who see the chance to advance their goals, including the
ordination of women and the suspension of the requirement for priestly celibacy.
There is also a strongly defensive element to this strategy. Opponents of the Church know
that there is a well-documented and strong correlation between male homosexuality and child
sexual abuse, but claim that there is no evidence supporting this connection.
And, of course, those who are currently attacking the Church hope that they can undermine
its moral authority to preach on the sinfulness of homosexual behavior and weaken its opposition to
ersatz homosexual “marriage.”
This paper demonstrates that there is indeed a very strong link between male homosexuality
and child sexual abuse. It also shows that there is a similar rate of child sexual abuse among other
very large groups of adult males (e.g., Protestant clergy, who are usually married), thus proving that
celibacy is not the root of the problem ─ homosexuality is.

I am taking the unusual step of quoting myself because part of my statement is incorrect. The John Jay study was done by criminologists, not psychologists. It is an important first step in demonstrating the extent of the problem, and that is within the competentcy of criminologists and statistical analysts.

When I saw that the study made a conclusion about the role of homosexuality in the abuse of minors, I assumed, wrongly, that psychologists and psychiatrists were involved in the study. Hey, I have been watching “Law and Order” for many years and the cops on that show always consult with a psychologist or psychiatrist when they deal with sex crimes.

The Ave Maria radio program, Kresta in the Afternoon, had an interview with the pyschiatrist who is a consultant to the USCCB last week. I believe it was May 31, but the archives for that day are missing from the Ave Maria web site and I do not remember his name. The psychiatrist blasted the conclusion of the report because it was made by people not competent to make that conclusion. He also made the comment that in most secular universities, any research that appeared critical of the homosexual agenda would kill the chance for attaining tenure.

If you want to do valid research about the connection between homosexuality and sexual abuse of minors, shouldn’t you ask what percentage of homosexual priests did not abuse minors? The criminologists did not ask that question because homosexual acts between consenting adults are not crimes in most juristictions.

Take heart all you non-psychologists who think the conclusion of the criminologists is ridiculous on its face. You are just as qualified in your opinion as the criminologists were in theirs, and I agree with you.
 
I studied criminology as part of one degree program and I can ASSURE anyone that criminologists have absolutely no business writing that report with those conclusions.
