(CNN) – Forty-five years after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a ban on interracial marriage, the rate of marriage across racial and ethnic lines in the United States is on the rise, according to a new study released Thursday.
And while such “intermarriages” continue to grow, so too does public acceptance of such unions, according to the study by the Pew Research Center’s Social and Demographic Trends project.
About 15% of new marriages in the United States in 2010 were between spouses of different races or ethnicities, more than doubling the 1980 level of 6.7%, according to the study.
Looking at all married couples in 2010, regardless of when they married, so-called “intermarriages” reached an all-time high of 8.4% in 2010, compared to 3.2% in 1980, the study said.
The study analyzed the demographic and characteristics of newlyweds who differ in race or ethnicity and compared them to couples of the same race or ethnicity. The study defines newly weds as couples who married in the year prior to the survey date.
Among all newlyweds in 2010, 9% of whites married outside of their race or ethnicity, along with 17% of African-Americans, 26% of Hispanics and 28% of Asians – a term that includes native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders.
Gender patterns in intermarriages vary widely, the study found. About 24% of African-American males married outside their race in 2010, compared to 9% of African-American females.

Definitely good news 👍, although America is a bit slower in accepting interracial couples than the UK.

Yes, this is good news and, hopefully this trend will continue.

I could care less what the race of my daughter’s future husband will be. I would prefer that he be Catholic though. 😉

This is still an issue in this day and age? Really?

No, seriously, really?

Melanin should not dictate who anyone loves, IMHO.

Yes. A 2007 film, Run, Fat Boy, Run involves a mixed race couple (white man, black woman) and has to do with his trying to win her back from Hank Azaria by participating in the London Marathon. No references to racism or any incongruity in their mixed relationship, nor in anything wrong with their out-of-wedlock son.

That last would not be my preference, but my demand. It’ll be hard enough for a mixed marriage to work even in 2012 without the overriding problems of being of different faiths.

Will once they’re 18. . . . . .

I’m with you though. I certainly don’t want a Protestant in the family.

That comment is more than a little upsetting. If the couple truly recognize their differences as such and commit to their marriage bond rather than changing their spouse, their marriage can be even stronger than otherwise. There can be a false sense of security in perceived similarity.

It works for me.

Glad to see this.

The worst thing to happen to genetics is the idea of not “mixing”.

Just like purebred dogs, problems arise and increase over time. Mutts generally seem to have better health overall. I want mutt kids if I ever have them. Subjecting some poor kid to a life of sunscreen and sunglasses to even function outside is not what I want for my kids.

If I pass on my genes, may the melanin win.

If we look at the history of the assimilation of immigration groups, accwptance of intermarriage seems to have been the point of full acceptance, and why, I thought, there was not a full acxeptance of African-Americans here in the US. I am happy to see this sign of increased unity for our country 🙂

There is something very wrong in having a son out of wedlock.

Most people I know are in or have been in interracial relationships. Out of my two sisters and me, only one married in our same race. It’s extremely common here. My parents are also divorced and remarried. They are both married to people not of our race.

Sure, but sometimes it happens, even to Catholics. But, not so very wrong as to warrant an abortion to “make things right.” The mixed race child, however, had nothing to do with the plot of the film.

The major issue with mixed race children is that they may have problems later in life in finding acceptance in the culture. Often both races reject the child and it has negative effects on them.

I know, that was my response, too. 😛 There are still people out there who do not accept interracial marriages?

Maybe it’s just my age and/or where I grew up, but to me this always seemed like an issue that had already been resolved. 🤷

Today, yes, but in the U.S. less and less of that attitude as time goes by.

So should people deny their love to account for the sins of others.

Racism is a sin.
