Study: More U.S. girls starting puberty early

Something that was never discussed in journals, I"m sure, but what about the long, long, long ago days when women (what we would call girls now) were married and had babies at 11 or so? Are we to assume that puberty happened at 11 for them or that it was earlier (like 8 or 9)? Just food for thought.

Its an interesting question, but I wonder how long ago are you talking about? Are you saying 100 years or 1000 years ago?

It seems, from reading the Bible and such, that life expectancies and many other things about the human body seem to always be changing and going in a cycle. It’s only recently that we’ve been more successful in “playing God” and affecting the natural cycles, ebbs and flows.

Both starvation and obesity in the pregnant mother lead to early puberty. Puberty was early before because of starvation. In the last century, puberty was increasingly delayed because of more healthy diets. Now puberty is again early because of prenatal obesity and other stressors.
