We should respect others, but we should not allow desire for respect *from *others to control us. If we fail to do some kind or devout act out fear of losing the respect of others, that is acting out of “human respect” and placing something other than God first in our hearts.
 
Actual things I’ve either said, heard or seen at my parish:

“Ooh, it’s Laetare Sunday, gotta dig out my Pink Veil!”

[Bumper sticker on minivan parked next to me at church] “B4 U Ask - Yes they’re all mine!”

“You’ve only got six kids? Eh, hard to get impressed unless you’ve got double digits.”

[Me at the March for Life this year] “I’m looking for my parish group. I’m looking for the priest in the cassock, that will be my priest.”

“How did I adapt to the new responses to the mass in my parish? What new responses?”

“I wonder if my priest will mind me praying the Office with my BrevMeum app on my iPhone in front of the tabernacle?”

“We don’t pray the Luminous mysteries at our parish. No, seriously.”
 
I attend an OFonly parish and all our priest wear cassocks regularly. And if you were at the March for Life in DC you could have been directed to any one of hundreds of parish groups with a priest in a cassock! 😛 It’s always really cold that day and cassocks are warm!! hehe

You are quite fortunate. In the Diocese of Dallas, we’re lucky if priests even wear their collars outside of their parish.

To give an example of how rare cassocks are in Dallas, at the rally at the end of the march a group of kids asked to have their picture taken with Father. When they walked away, he looked at me and said, “Well, that was random.”

As MikeDunphy said, “human respect” refers to caring more about what men think than what God thinks. If we base our actions more on how our neighbors, family, and co-workers will react, than what is in accordance with God’s will, then we are acting out of “human respect”. Do we want to be popular or be holy? Sometimes the two go hand in hand, but very often they do not.

OK, I understand, but that is not just for traditional Catholics, that is for every Christian that professes Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior–to put God first and not care about what humans think. That is why I was confused. I never heard the term used in that way. Most people who sincerely try to live like this don’t go around talking about it – they just do it.
