But he was overthrown and the new government wants to instill Democratic values. I believe they have been a pleasant surprise. On the conflict in Darfur, I don’t believe peace has been reached, the conflict is ongoing. South Sudan has been another troubled place. News is that UN forces are now leaving there though, so, it seems it has likely calmed down.
Their former dictator, al Bashir was considered pretty terrible. On lists one can find of “Africa’s worst dictators” (yes, such lists exists on the web), he will make the top 10. Genocide in Darfur use to be something you heard about a lot? It sounds like it had quite a bit to do with him. Sudan’s transitional government agreed to separate religion from the state, ending 30 years of Islamic rule in the North African nation.
Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and Abdel-Aziz al-Hilu, a leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North rebel group, signed a declaration in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, on Thursday adopting the principle.
“For Sudan to become a democratic country where the rights of all citizens are enshrined, the constitution should be based on the principle of ‘separation of religion and state,’ in the absence of which the right to self-determination must be respected,” the document states.
