I am a physician, currently employed by the US Navy, and deployed to a war zone. My job is to provide routine medical care, and trauma care (which is my specialty) to military persons of all nations deployed to Afghanistan.

My commitment to the US military is ending within a couple of months, and I am considering what to do next. I am most attracted to “doctors without borders”, at this time. Compensation is not an issue for me. I have enough money to take care of myself for life. I am not likely to be starting a family. So, I am free to devote myself to my medical practice without other concerns.

I am looking for suggestion from faithful people on where my skills might be most needed.

Thanks.

Médecins Sans Frontières does good work.

I would suggest thinking about rural America, also. There are many places that would welcome you with open arms, and you would really make a difference,

Look into the west coast of Africa; some countries have only 1 hospital and the hospital beds are just that, beds.

I have an MD friend who has worked as a medical missionary in a small rural hospital in Kinjabe, Kenya and who also served in the same role in a small hospital on an American Indian reservation. The Kinjabe position also involved setting up a nursing program for those in the back country. There are a number of churches who sponsor such missionaries but I have no direct experience of any in a Catholic church or diocese. You might also try a stint in the Peace Corps.

All great suggestions. You really can’t go wrong with any of them. I think it would be down to what kind of support you would like to receive. Nothing would be more frustrating to me than to go where I’m needed and not get the equipment, and other resources I require to do good. So, a solid organization with adequate funding would be very desirable.

Thanks for your service, and good luck!

Thank you for serving.

People with your skills and experiences are needed all over the world, so you’ll be welcomed no matter where you decide to go.

If it were me, I’d look at the medically underserved areas of the U.S., particularly in Appalachia.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I have not been on here in quite a while. I have also received a few private messages which have me considering the possibilities.

Africa or Asia.

You might be lucky enough to kill two birds with one stone, by combining medical work with a missionary effort. It’s all good.
