Sunday Prayers Interrupted as Ice Block from Airplane Crashed through Cathedral Roof

As the priest was saying the eucharistic prayer at the Catholic cathedral in Essex, England, a block of ice fell through the roof with a crash like a massive explosion. After standing a few seconds trembling in shock, the priest continued with the mass. A government spokesman said without evidence that it must have fallen from an airplane.

Nobody was hurt. They’ve even fixed the roof already!

But yeah, it’s like something out of a medieval chronicler.

Remember, folks that once the Eucharistic prayer begins, it has to be completed if at all possible. Even if he had died, it’s supposed to be completed as soon as possible by another priest. So that had to be his priority.

(If it had looked like the rest of the roof was going to fall in, he could direct the ushers to continue elsewhere, and there are various contingency plans that priests learn about. But Essex Cathedral has a very foursquare sort of roof, apparently.)

Just temporary repairs, and they are proving less than adequate

Unfortunately, while temporary repairs were carried out almost immediately, the driving winds and rain of Monday night meant that the roof leaked and the ceiling became stained. Chris James estimates that the cost of repairs could be as much as £1,000. “The broken slates have already been replaced and waterproofed but we needed to hire a cherry picker to access that part of the roof,” he says. “And the internal redecoration of the ceiling has still to be done.” He says the damage could have been worse though: “The block hit a timber maintenance walkway in the roof. If it had struck a few feet to one side, it might well have brought the ceiling down.”

Brentford Cathedral is the newest one in England, having been built 20 years ago. I wonder if the building’s youth means its construction is more resilient than an a building which is more than a century old?
