My SD said that it always used to be sung, anyone know how to get ahold of it? Preferably on itunes! As in, who has done a good rendition of it etc.

Actually, it was always whispered silently, and never said or sung aloud, until the Novus Ordo.
You might be looking for something that doesn’t exist.

Perhaps I got the wrong end of the stick from him in that case. Guess I misheard him! Cheers for clearing that up.

My former pastor used to sing it occasionally – it was absolutely beautiful – and you could feel the level of prayerful concentration in the church.

Actually, the notes for chanting the EP are found in the Roman Missal. However, the EP is never to be accompanied by music. Please see this note from Redemptionis Sacramentum:
52.] 53.] While the Priest proclaims the Eucharistic Prayer “there should be no other prayers or singing, and the organ or other musical instruments should be silent”,132 except for the people’s acclamations that have been duly approved, as described below.
Here is what the GIRM says on the subject:
It is very appropriate that the priest sing those parts of the Eucharistic Prayer for which musical notation is provided.
This is the tail end of #147 in the GIRM.

I have heard Pope Benedict chant the EP on occasion. I did have a bad experience at the Cathedral in San Antonio, though. The priest decided to do Marty Haugen’s rendition, but, there was a piano accompanying him and the pianist went into this annoying crescendo at the consecratio. After Mass, I politely told the celebrant that this was against the norms but he brushed me off and said that it was allowed. I respectfully told him that it is not, per RS. Suffice to say that I have not gone back there for weekend Mass whenever I’m at the Alamo City. I would much rather go to St. Francesco di Paola.

Our pastor chants it on special occasions. He usually has the organist or guitarist play the first note so he gets into tune. Other than that, he chants it a-capella.

Anciently, holy words in ANYBODY’S religion were either recited silently or chanted. Saying them in a normal speaking voice was considered ill-mannered and irreverent.

At the beginning of the Church’s life, the Anaphora (originally the only prayer) was chanted in a melody resembling the ancient Western preface chant (according to all I’ve read).

I myself prefer to hear it chanted.

Please correct but…

The old mass, if it was a high mass, was chanted except for the silent bit.

The new mass can be chanted from top to bottom but I rarely hear it chanted.

I wasn’t sung. It was chanted. 😉 There’s a difference.

Father Joseph on EWTN chants the Mass (EP) reverently. He doesn’t do it all the time, but I love it when he does.

I think you’re talking about the prayers like the Gloria, the Credo & the Sanctus. But the EP? It was silent, even at High Masses.
