I looked for a forum to post this in, but none seemed to fit. I wanted to ask how do you all deal with charity support?

I offered to do some fund raising the other day, just by selling some Christmas cards, nothing too special. However, after looking through the list of charities, there are a number on there that support research on embryos, or are members of an organisation that is supportive of embryo research, or are involved with projects that counsel abortion as an acceptable option for pregnancy, and so on.
Some of the charities are among the top names in charities, at least they are here in the UK. Names like Diabetes UK, Cancer Research UK, Help The Aged, British Heart Foundation, NSPCC, etc.

I find myself in a postion where I’m not sure what to do. I want to do what I can to help people who need it. But if so many of the top charities are involved in questionable activities, how will I get round this? Do I participate in the fund-raising, or should I avoid? I have an idea what I will do, I’m just curious how others would react in this postion.

Thanks.

I wouldn’t support it if they support abortion and embryonic research. If you know they do this and still do the fundraiser (which supports these groups, even indirectly), I believe that’s something you’ll have to answer God about one day.

There are lots of ways to help those in need that don’t support things that go against church teaching. Contact your parish to see about opportunities that are available.

Good for you for wanting to help those in need! 🙂

I donate to charities that are in line with my values. Mostly that means that I donate to local groups where I can see what they’re doing – a group that provides housing for families that would otherwise be on the street, a group that provides winter shelter for the homeless, a food pantry, etc. I also give money to Kiva (www.kiva.org) which makes small loans to people and groups in other countries.

I have qualms about most health-related charities because there’s such a good chance that their research includes destroying embryos. I can’t stop them from doing the research, but I can choose not to be a part of it.

How about Catholic Charities? 🙂

Encouraging replies, thank you. Particularly about having to answer for our actions to God one day.

I think in my mind I’ve already decided I cannot help out with this fund-raising activity, I just wanted to canvass opinion, it could well have been I was being over-sensitive.

What is troubling me a little is I am involved in this fund-raising as a consequence of being involved with the Christian Aid charity. If there is other fund-raising they do that supports similar charities I’m going to have to withdraw my support for them too, which would be a real shame.
