We already have 2 threads and 3 posts on this editorial.

Obviously just another piece of shock value fishwrap to get clicks.

The “cult of St. Pope JPII” isn’t going anywhere.

Why this newspaper is allowed to continue using the word “Catholic”, I’ll never know.

Yes I didn’t realise. My post was moved here. Thanks for letting me know @Irishmom2.

Well, is there any way for the Vatican could force them to stop, by taking them to court over it or something?

Church Mlitant used to put out content under the name of “RealCatholicTV” and the Archbishop of Detroit published notice that he didn’t consider them authorized to use the word “Catholic”. Since the Catholic Church doesn’t have intellectual property rights over the term “Catholic”, that was the most the Archbishop could do, but Voris changed the name of his brand.

The Distorter is based out of Kansas City, Missouri, and several bishops have issued similar statements condemning its use of the word “Catholic”, but it refuses to change. Someone higher up the Vatican food chain would likely have to take action to get them to stop, as they obviously don’t care about what the bishops think, but I’m sure it could be arranged. I’m willing to bet that this attack on St. Pope JPII might get the attention of somebody at higher levels.

In that case, whatever people might think of it, that’s +1 to Church Militant. At least they took out the word Catholic when requested to do so.

I remember reading about that whole issue with The National Catholic Reporter on wikipedia, and there it claims one bishop told them to take ‘Catholic’ out of their name. You say that there were other bishops who requested the same thing and were also ignored?

Tbh it wouldn’t surprise me that they don’t care what bishops think. I mean why would they? They certainly don’t seem to care about the teachings of the Catholic Church, based on some of the stuff they write there.

There’s been something like 4 or 5 bishops of KC since NCR started publishing. Two of them said the word “Catholic” should be taken out. The second bishop who requested this evidently left his post under a cloud due to sex abuse coverups and NCR seems to have been pretty gleeful about that. The other bishops didn’t care and just let the paper go on its merry way.

NCR is a disgusting lot. They can write what they want but don’t call yourself “National Catholic Reporter” if you spend all day questioning Church teaching. They don’t represent my views as a Catholic and they should have the decency to change their name. God will get them in the end. “Vengeance is mine, saith the Lord” and all that.

Having looked at the wiki page of the National ‘Catholic’ Reporter again, I notice there are indeed 2 bishops (at least) who condemned them. Perhaps my memory of what I read wasn’t that good, or the page was tweaked since the last time I read it (probably the former).

Apparently the Catholic Press Association reported that the dispute (between the bishop and website) ‘arose from a difference of opinion about the function of the press’. The bishop had said the publication openly and deliberately opposed the teachings of the Church. It’s odd that the Catholic Press Association would say that. What’s also odd is that they would allow NCR to be a part of their association. It doesn’t speak well of them.

The Catholic Press are probably no different than the secular press. The media in general are usually a bunch of lefties who like to challenge authority and resent being told what to do.

Voris and his crew obviously don’t want to be seen as lefties or progressives or as analogous to the National Catholic Reporter types of this world. There are likely also a lot of Catholics out there whom they consider CINOs and wouldn’t want to be identified with.
