Supreme Court Gives Catholic Schools a Boost

A sharply divided Supreme Court upheld Arizona’s tax-credit program, which offers dollar-for-dollar reduction in state income tax for donations to tuition organizations that support religious schools.

The court’s 5-4 decision April 4 sets a precedent that could benefit religious schools throughout the country, including Catholic schools.

We’ve got a somewhat convoluted process here in Illinois with a somewhat similar aim. Families here can deduct 25% of their private k-12 tuition (other than the first $250) up to a limit of $500 per family.

Given that even parish subsidized tuition is north of $3,000 per kid these days, it ain’t much help, but it’s something! And though they’d never admit it, it’s hugely good business for the public school systems. If every catholic school in Illinois closed right now, the influx of new students (but no new revenue) would bankrupt the public school system.

wow I never thought of that. You’re absolutely right! Parents are still paying taxes that go to public schools, but the schools don’t have to spend the money on their children because they’re going to catholic schools.
