IMO, this gaurantees Obama for a second term and beyond.

We also now conclusively know that it is impossible to know what we will get with any justices approved to the SC bench. Roberts went to the left.
It means no such thing. It simply means people on either side will dig their heels in.

Anyone following this knows the White House claims that this was NOT a tax, and yet despite that, this is the ruling. Hardly persuasive.

And anyone not following this doesn’t care. Even yesterday, most political ?experts" (for whatever they are worth) admitted it will still come back to the economy, whatever the verdict.

**Live from ScotusBlog: ‘The court reinforces that individuals can simply refuse to pay the tax and not comply with the mandate’ **

What does that mean?
SCOTUS Blog: ‘Apologies - you CAN’T refuse to pay the tax; typo. The only effect of not complying with the mandate is that you pay the tax’

Drudge now has: The court reinforces that individuals CAN"T simply refuse to pay the tax and not comply with the mandate… without the apostrophe

So I guess that people can *either *pay the tax *or *acquire insurance. I don’t see how this can *possibly *count as a tax.
So now, Obama’s pledge of no tax increases for those under $250k went out the window, again?

With the unpopularity of the mandate?
The SC found it constitutional, so people will now think it is fine. People think the justices are like demi-gods, to what they declare is good. Look at Roe V. Wade for a hint.

Obama wins in November 55%-44.%

Supreme Court Upholds Obama Health Care Mandate

The Supreme Court has upheld the individual insurance requirement at the heart of President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul.

The court on Thursday handed Obama a campaign-season victory in rejecting arguments that Congress went too far in requiring most Americans to have health insurance or pay a penalty.

The individual mandate, the law’s backers say, is needed to cover 33 million uninsured people, but it’s also a requirement that polls say most Americans want to see thrown out.

RomneyCare is a state program that would not fit every state which Romney has said himself, he has also said there are things he would change.

The mandate is unpopular, whatever poll you read, this is going to help Romney. In fact, some have said if the mandate was struck down that would help Obama because the unpopular part would then be thrown out. Now it is left in, that is not going to help Obama.
Romney would have the states put the mandate in place.

Without the mandate, the program doesn’t work.

Romeny put the mandate in Massachusetts, because he knew it wouldn’t work otherwise.

Either way, if Romney is elected, he will not have the number of votes in Congress to thrown Obama Care out, and he knows it. The Senate is still in control of the democrats.

I can’t believe that John Roberts was in the majority.
For all the whining about the politicization of the court, does the left wing of the Court EVER break ranks on major decisions like this? Kennedy, Roberts, and Day O’Connor have many times.

Odd.

I disagree. I think this is an enormous win for Obama, and the left will become highly charged, and those in the middle will just go along.
I think there was more of a danger of an energized Obama base had it been overturned. Now they just have the tear up the “Supreme Court is politicized!!!” script.

In my view, the decision does little for his campaign. It’s still the economy.

Maybe he can just choose not to enforce it, like DOMA, or certain immigration laws?

😉

No it doesn’t.

If you have health insurance, you don’t pay the tax.

And why shouldn’t those who refuse to buy insurance pay the tax?

After all, they’re the one’s who cost us who do, lots of money when they show up in ER’s without health insurance.

Indeed. The live stream I saw said the decision was 6-3, but now every article I have seen says 5-4. That means Roberts was the swing vote this time, not Kennedy.

I guess we’ll be able to parse it out ourselves once the SCOTUS website posts the decision.

Bottom line: the Church will be required to fund abortions et alia.

And there’s the final nail in the coffin. The government can do whatever they want. By nature governments grow and grow and grab more and more power.

The constitution is a joke. All of the judges on the supreme court are statists and benefit by the growing power of the government and police state. Anyone expecting liberty to be taken into consideration is kidding themselves.

Hooray for empire!!!

Could this be said that this is the largest tax hike?
Not only that, but has there ever been such a drastic tax increase that would affect the middle class?

Good grief, I am sick to my stomach. I can only hope that this will increase support for Romney. This mandate is NOT popular with voters.
