"Surfing" Madonna Grafitti Gets Calif. Beach City Talking

It’s beautiful. And it uses the surfing theme but without disrespect.

A Google search shows many, many people in admiration or even awe at the work.

Hopefully it can be preserved as it is taken down.
 
The way all the stories read, I was expecting it to look a lot better…

See - now I would disagree…Unique? Yes. Insulting? No.
I personally think that Mom is smiling over this one.

I’m glad to hear that, while the city feels it needs to be removed (put up without due process), they are going to look into how it might be removed without damage.

I like it, but I would have rather liked a serpent design on the surf board, with the head under her foot, instead of what’s there.

How dare they sully the good name of surfing by attaching it to the Virgin Mary:D

On more serious note, I don’t see why this is even newsworthy.
Unless its part of an emerging pattern of defacing public property with religious grafitti or something.

I honestly loathe the style of depicting the human figure when it comes to traditional (Catholic) religious art. The flatness and lack of perspective makes all the people (especially Mary and other women) look like poorly crafted dolls in my opinion.

ENCINITAS — An unauthorized but increasingly beloved stained-glass mosaic(WOW) of a surfing Madonna must come down, all five Encinitas City Council members said on the dais Wednesday.

At the same time, however, the City Council unanimously voted to spend $2,000 for an arts conservation agency to study how the piece can be removed without damaging it.

A group of artists apparently dressed as construction workers installed the mosaic in broad daylight in the days before Easter. It depicts Our Lady of Guadalupe on a surfboard with the words “Save the Ocean” down the side. The mosaic, however, did not go through the city’s customary public review process and is considered graffiti under Encinitas municipal code.

What there is, is the angel holding up a “crescent”. To Juan Diego and his fellow Aztecs, this revelation had great meaning, coupled with the miraculous image of Our Lady standing on top of a “crescent,” the symbol of this evil serpent god which appears on the Tilma of St Juan Diego.

She IS standing upon a serpent,🙂

Yeah, but a bright green actual serpent would have added some nice “pop” color-wise, and more people would understand the point of it.
 
Considering some of the images of Our Lady that have been made, this one is beautiful. And does it not allude to another of her titles, ‘Star’ of the Sea…

Ah, very good observation! That helps me understand the work a little bit better.

I wouldn’t count myself as a fan, since the whimsical nature of the piece could be considered sacrilegious. But obviously , others here disagree and the same seems to be true in the Encinitas area. 🤷

Incidentally, there is a Mary, Star of the Sea parish both in Oceanside, California and La Jolla, California. Encinitas is approximately halfway between the two, which are 30 miles apart. I wonder if that plays a part in the placement of the piece in Encinitas, or if the town simply was convenient.

Guerrilla art, or street art, is a movement. Banksy is perhaps the best known practitioner. Once it begins in a city it may continue, so each government needs to come up with a policy on how to deal with it.
