Hello Everybody…

I need some sane people to talk to right now.

I have a herniated cervical disc, and will be having surgery in 2 weeks. I am very scared about the surgery, I will get an artificial cervical disc, which is a new FDA-approved procedure, instead of a neck fusion. I have been in alot of pain for sometime.

My family is very messed up. I lived through much abuse growing up. My alcoholic father primarily singled me out for the abuse. I was physical assaulted at least once a week for years. My dad would say terrible things to me, that I was a “parasite” or a “trash can” and so on. Often I wasn’t allowed to eat dinner with the rest of the family because my dad labelled me as a “manipulator” and he accused me of many vile things. Through counselling, I have learned that my dad was so jealous of my mother’s relationship with me and he saw me as a threat. My life was very, very hard for many years. My brother also abused me. I know he suffered abuse, too, but I feel I bore the brunt of it. I have read recently how siblings of “severely scapegoated children” often acquire an empathy deficit for their sibling, because they learn its not safe to associate with the sibling who is getting the brunt of the abuse. I think that is what is going on with my brother, because he is very mean to me.

OK, here is what happened last Thursday. My mom is here with me to help me and will be with me for my surgery. Neither my brother or father have called me yet to wish me well with my health problems. Just before Easter my dad did call my Mom and I picked up the phone. Instead of wishing me well, he just told me to go get my mother. At the time of this call, my dad went off on a vacation to Hawaii with my brother. I think my brother heard this call, and decided to finally send me an email. He did say he wished me well with my surgery. (I can’t help wishing I had someone talk to me in person instead of just one email.) Anyway, my brother has a little daughter who I rarely have gotten to see. My brother just doesn’t like me. I have been sending her gifts because I want her to know she has an aunt who cares about her. She loves dresses. So, I sent her a beautiful dress for Easter. My brother said in this email that she is talking constantly about her dress. I responded and thanked him for wishing me well, and I said, “Could you send me a picture of her in her dress?” My brother never responded back. My mom and I were talking about the dress beforehand and how we hoped to see her in it. Easter came and went, and I did mention just once, “Do you think you’ll get a picture of her in her dress”? I never said anything more about it.

This past Thursday I finally got my surgery scheduled and I felt better than I had in months. That evening the phone rang and it was my brother. He was so angry, and after some terse smalltalk, he launched into that he didn’t like me very much, that I was manipulating my mother and holding her hostage. When I said, why are you telling me this? I"m having surgery in 2 weeks… He said that he is unable to feel empathy. I hung up on him at that point. My mom heard the whole interchange and was dumbfounded. She had talked to him earlier, and had mentioned if he could send a photo of Samantha in her pretty dress. At that point, she said, he got very upset, and said some bad things about me. My mom had said to him, just forget sending a picture, and thought it was all done. So, when he called me that evening to harangue me, it was totally unexpected.

To make a long story short, it escalated with him sending me an email to say I was not to ever contact him, his wife or her daughter ever again, and that nothing good could come out of me contacting them.

My mother and I have been talking about this, because I spent 2 days crying. She says this is how my father treats her. This is all over a Easter dress for a little girl. It’s crazy. My dad does the same thing, pick something out of the blue, and attack. My mom tried to talk to my brother the next day, and she told him she was very dissappointed in what he did. He did admit the timing was bad, just before my surgery, but he refused to budge in calling me a manipulator. My brother is in counselling for his own issues, and has been diagnosed with hypomania, whathever that is. He also has told my mom he can’t remember things from our childhood. My brother did tell me mom that he doesn’t want his daughter to see him react this way. This is probably why I am now shunned. I feel my brother is blaming me for his totally over-the-top behavior.

I just feel so wrongly accused. All I did was buy a dress and give it as a gift. And, I got this attack when I am most vulnerable.

*I’m so sorry irena. What a situation to be brought up in. I read the book, A Child Called It…have you ever read that? It basically depicts a boy who from age 4 to 12 (until he was taken away from his home–thank goodness–and placed in foster homes) was abused non stop, by his alcoholic mother. Your story sounds so similiar…how he was singled out, etc. What the author did was get counseling, for years…and through prayer etc…he realized that his mom had a lot of problems, resorted to alcohol…and he became a means of escape for her, through the abuse. What he also learned was to love himself, despite not having love from his mother. Like a boy to his mother, a girl looks to her dad for affirmation…and you not only didn’t get it from your dad, but your mom stood by and allowed her daughter to be abused. My advice would be to keep some distance with your family…they seem to still want to hurt you…for whatever the reasons. Your mom standing by all those years…no excuse. I am sure she was abused also by your dad…still, no excuse to allow your kids to be abused like that. I’m a mom, I’d go nuts if my husband laid a hand on our kids, or belitted them like your dad did. I was belitted by my BIL growing up…I was raised by my sister and her husband…my parents died when I was very young…so, I know your pain. I wasn’t hit, but the belitting still hurts, thinking back. But, you have to forgive…even if you never hear an apology…because without forgiving, you’ll never move on–for yourself.

Keep praying…and know that we care about you here. Just feel free to pm me anytime if you want to chat about this…Know that you are not at fault for your dad resorting to abuse…he needs help, and terribly sad that no one has the guts to tell him so …namely your mother.

I would keep my distance. Be polite…but, from a distance. You need to be strong for surgery…God bless you…I will keep you in my prayers.*

Hi Irena,
I’m sorry that your family is so dysfunctional. I feel for you and your mother.

My unprofessional advice to you is that you have nothing whatsoever to do with your brother and your father and just live your life without he or your father in it. You have suffered your father’s abuse all of your life. You must realize that you will never have a healthy, loving relationship with either he or your brother and it’s time that you accepted that and wrote them off.

Additionally, even though you didn’t ask about this, I personally think that your mother would find herself much better off without either of them in her life as well. If I were in a marriage like your mother’s I think I would have left that man a long time ago and went to a priest to have that marriage annulled. It’s just so unhealthy to live with sick people and in your case as well as your mother’s, neither one of you has to accept being treated so badly.

You may want to seek the professional advice of a psychologist to help you through this breaking away, this divorcing if you will, of your father and brother.

God bless you and your mom.

One more thing…you can’t change who they are…who your dad is…why your mom doesn’t do anything…you can only control how you act, and grow from here on out. A tough beginning doesn’t mean you have to have a tough life. Allow God to love you…embrace your faith…and Christ will hold your hand through this life. You are a beautiful creation in Christ…don’t ever ever let anyone tell you differently. :o

Praying also for a safe surgery, and smooth recovery!

Whatevergirl is SO right about your mother. I read too quickly and didn’t even consider that your mother also bears the responsibility of not protecting you all of those years from your father’s abuse.

Your mother is helping you now but she did fail you as a child when you needed her most. Please pray for clarity and seek the help of a professional counsellor on how to take the best possible care of yourself.

All the best.

*And, I understand the dynamics of an abusive household…I didn’t grow up in a physically abusive home…but, I understand the dynamics. I understand irena, that your mom felt scared…etc…also. But…she should have protected you…and still, it sounds like she sits by and watches the drama go on. She has her own issues, and again, you have to forgive for what happened. Pray for your dad, mom, brother…that they grow close to Christ, short of developing a true relationship with Jesus, they will continue in their misery.

Praying for you!!! *

I just feel so wrongly accused. All I did was buy a dress and give it as a gift. And, I got this attack when I am most vulnerable.
Actually, this is not about the Easter dress at all. That whole situation may have been the catalyst for the most recent drama, but it’s definitely not the cause. The causes run deeper than that and probably have its roots in the abuse cycle your family has suffered through.

Since your brother has asked for no contact, respect his wishes, but pray every day for reconciliation, and for your ability to forgive (I KNOW it’s hard). But praying for him will also benefit you.

Be ready to extend an olive branch if he ever shows signs of being willing to relax his stance. In the meantime, read the book “Boundaries” by Dr. Henry McCloud so you can better deal with some of your toxic family members. (I’ve also heard that Dr. Greg Popcak’s book “Help! These People Are Driving Me Crazy!” is a good one, but rather hard to find in my experience.)

Good luck… this is a hard situation to be in. I hope your surgery is successful!

As others have said, it’s not the dress at all. I’m so sorry for what you’re going through right now. I have no brilliant insights, but I’ll keep you in my prayers.

*Hi irena…how are you today?
I wanted to add that I think it’s important to have compassion for your mom and dad. You can love them, from a distance. But, I came to the conclusion a long time ago, that people who hurt other people, are hurting within themselves. So…the reasons your dad abused you…the reasons why your mom stood by and let it happen…are most likely, because they themselves grew up seeing dysfunction in their own childhoods. Sadly, that is often the case, and it’s often repeated when the children who witnessed such things, grow up and have families of their own.

I do have compassion for your mom…I’m sure she feared your father. That being said, at some point, she should have lept to your rescue…either by leaving your dad (I don’t advocate divorce but if a kid is being abused on a regular basis…then…), screaming, defending you in some way etc…that she didn’t, is part of where your pain probably comes in. And here is your brother now, verbally abusing you…

You don’t need to listen to anymore abuse! I would kindly respond…I have to go, thanks for calling*…or whatever. They have to come to terms with their own behavior, with God. Again, you can only control your own life, and if they choose to continue to wallow in their own problems, you can pray for them…and extend a loving ear, hand, etc…but, you do NOT have to continue to listen to abuse. Just don’t subject yourself to it anymore…you are not the reason for it, they have to find help to get past their hurts.

I will keep you all in my prayers. Just wanted to check in with you here today. :hug1:

Irena,
I’m sad to read all you’ve been through.
I ask God to help you recover from this unecessary abuse and hurt, and ask God to let you know you are special and loved.

We’ll be praying for your surgery, and that you will recover well, and please God will be pain-free soon.

Please let us know whan you can, how you are going.
God grant you peace.

Warm regards, Trishie

Everybody, thank you so much for your kind replies…

I have been through alot, and life has been very hard. I’m finally able to see blessings in my life, instead of only darkness and pain.

I agree, this is not about the dress. It just doesn’t make sense. There is just some weird control/anger dynamic still going on. One time my brother violently blew up at me in front of his wife, I was driving the car and he became upset and started yelling at me and demanded I stop the car immediately. When I didn’t, he demanded that I do as he said, and reached over and pulled up the parking brake while I was driving. I was only going 30 mph, and this did bring the car to an abrupt stop, with cars behind us having to stop abruptly, too. My brother’s wife was upset, not at me, and told my mother she had never seen my brother act this way before. I think this is an example of why my brother wants to cut me out. He said as much to my Mom, that he can’t risk having his daughter see him react like this. Instead of looking at himself, I am blamed for these violent reactions, so he wants to get me out of the picture. He picks really stupid things to get upset about, and seems to need to see me in the same way that my dad did.

I do agree my Mom should have stood up and protected me. I have had alot of anger issues with her about this. But, in her defense, she is the only one in my family who is trying to change herself, and she has become more perceptive and more able to speak up for herself. She also has grown alot in the last few years through counselling. I can forgive her for the past, what I hope most is to have her not turn a blind eye to what goes on in the present.

I am going to write down all the books everyone suggested and I will most definately read them! 🙂

A Evangelical friend prayed with me over this, and about an hour after the prayer, I felt alot more peace about it all. I felt a revelation that I need to focus on myself, build more friends and seek fellowship. Not get tied up with my niece and focusing on her. I have been a loner all my life, in fact, I think you could say I had a social phobia. I really need to join groups and get involved in things. What also is amazing is that night, afer my friend prayed with me, I could have sworn there was this red light around me when I went to bed. Have anyone experienced this? There was no red lights in my bed room, just a yellowish light from my alarm clock. I said to my Mom, do you see the red light? She kept saying, “What red light?”.

As far as my surgery goes, I am still scared, but I need to trust God and trust the doctors. My arms and hands go numb frequently, which is very scary to me. I have alot of pain, too, even though I have large doses of Vicodin to get me through until the surgery.

Thank you again for all of your thoughtful replies and kind wishes. I will keep you all in my prayers.

Irena
considering all you’ve been through, and your understanding and attitudes I believe you’re the most balanced and most blessed person in your family. 🙂
Treated like Joseph by his brothers who persecuted and sold him into slavery, you, like Joseph may in time be the shining star and the saving of your family. It took years, but in the end they came to him in their need and Joseph was able to save the family.(Genesis 37-45) Joseph forgave the family utterly. I find this the most moving story in the Old Testament.

You know that we’ll be praying for you that you can get through the time before surgery with some peace, and that the surgery will be successful.
W will also be praying for your recovery,
God bless you, Trishie

In prayer for you and your family, for healing of the family relationships and for your surgery

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come.
Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
