Have you come across any celebrities, politicians, musicians, who where Catholic, and it surprised you?

I don’t mean merely as a bad example (such as the alcoholic, drug abusing, sexual promiscuous musician).

And I don’t mean people who were raised Catholic but left the faith purposely.

For example, I just read in the Our Sunday Visitor that Stephen Colbert is Catholic. Not sure why that surprises me. It just does.

Another example, (although not Roman Catholic): Tom Hanks is Greek Orthodox.

I saw the movie “Bella” before I knew the main actor’s history, and it didn’t surprise me that he was Catholic.

I always respected Tony Snow, both when he was on Fox News and in the White House. Found out he was Catholic after reading his obituary.

Stephen Colbert is not only Catholic (and a Sunday school teacher), but he sticks up for the Faith on his show, often surprisingly well. He’s quite sharp. 🙂

I guess the celeb who surprised me the most is Michael Moore. He is a former seminarian and still attends Mass regularly.

Michael Moore? Wow. That beats Colbert.

I’ve never watched Colbert’s show. Just the clips I see on youtube, etc.

I voted early, by mail. Having the ballot at home, I was able to check each candidate online as to their Faith: There is a website. Almost every race in NW Ohio, has a Catholic running for office. Further, every political party in Ohio has a Catholic on their slate of candidates. These are the parties represented: Constitution, Democrat, Green, Libertarian and Republican … Also one with no party listed! (There is a Socialist candidate, besides). I don’t mind mentioning that there are other political parties that are pro-life. Very hard for a Democrat to be pro-life, at least it has been though there are some, surely.

Okay! I have someone specifically! Marty Stuart, a band leader on RFDTV. During his show, a picture of our Lord, a Catholic depiction, came up for a short minute. My Dad loves his show, as he does the Saturday night lineup. I have not verified this, but, it is a good guess, I believe, unless someone can advise me differently!

I had just mentioned to my sister that one may find surprises like this, and then I found your post.

PS. Fellow parishioners, who run a restaurant in town, the husband is from Tenessee. He attends Mass every Sunday with her, but has not converted. He says that he has been through some things in life that would shock people, but the one item was an aunt who played favorites with her nephews. He and his wife travel from another parish to come to ours.

I just found out a couple weeks ago that Liam Neeson is Catholic… that surprised me a bit.

How do you know that Michael Moore attends Mass on a regularly basis?

Liam Neeson spent six years as an altar boy, which had a powerful effect on him. He kind of strayed from the faith during his early adulthood, but while doing research (both readings and talking with priests) for his role in the 1986 film The Mission, he came back to it.

Well, that is what he said. I read it in news article two or three years ago.

You assume that everyone knows he’s from north Ireland… And even then there’s a difference between “living in a Catholic area” and “being a practicing Catholic” you know?

Well when I think of a Catholic, I think of someone who practices the faith, not someone who is nominally a Catholic because they were baptized as a baby. A Catholic is as a Catholic does, I guess you could say.

Why wouldn’t I be surprised? Not only is he a practicing Christian working in a vastly secularized industry, he’s a Catholic in a part of the world (the English speaking part) that is heavily Protestant.

It’s actually a bit of a game for me, spotting the famous Catholics. It’s like going bird watching for rare and exotic birds and can be very exciting when, after long days of watching, I finally see a flash of feathers!

Also, I’m surprised because he played an adulterous Catholic Priest in Breakfast on Pluto. And considering the subject matter of Breakfast on Pluto (it’s the story of a young transvestite in a world that doesn’t understand his innocent minded ways…), it’s just not the kind of film that screams “I’m a practicing Catholic!”

Interesting. I didn’t mean to imply that I disliked Breakfast on Pluto, I’m actually very fond of it and I enjoy Neil Jordan films. I didn’t even judge Liam negatively for his role in the film, it just never really struck me as a particularly Catholic role choice. There are some people who practically scream “Catholic” without having to say a word. Liam has never really come across as that to me. He didn’t set off my Catholic-DAR at all.

I was surprised to find that Kobe Bryant is Catholic and attends Mass.

He lives a life of ugly, vehement sin. You know, playing for the Lakers and all 😃

Just because hes “Catholic” Doesn’t mean he always has the Catholic Teaching in the front of his mind.

This surprised me when I know he is Pro Choice.

Speaking of pro athletes, I recall being surprised to find out that Brett Favre and his wife were Catholic (though I’ve also heard that Deanna Favre may have left the Church or at least is downplaying her Catholicism on her recent book tour). I’m not sure how much of this was because Favre hails from the South and has a “good ol’ boy” vibe, and how much of it just because Favre just strikes me as very immature for his age and I think of Catholicism as more of a “mature” faith. I thought he was immature even before he got into trouble for “sexting”, and all. I know many pro athletes profess religious beliefs yet get mired in sin, so please don’t think I’m singling Favre out here.

I know Philip Rivers is Catholic (has been on Life on the Rock on EWTN). And in baseball, I know Mike Sweeney is Catholic (saw him on Life on the Rock too). Tom Glavine is Catholic as well. Those didn’t surprise me.

👍👍👍

This Celitcs fan thinks he is in immediate need of many confessions. That, and a cold streak next time their in the finals!

I can name one politician that shocks me that she is “Catholic” almost instantly! Her name is, Pelosi!:rolleyes::mad:😦

Dean Koontz is Catholic. 🙂
That one really threw me for a loop… But then I read one of his books.
And it made sense.

Moore may be Catholic by birth and ethnic identity, but he is NOT a legitimate Catholic by any standard. His actions and beliefs are in direct opposition to Catholic teaching. 👍

And Colbert may be Catholic, but is he a DEVOUT, PRACTICING Catholic? That is the question.

Not me. His movies are saturated with his Catholic sensibilities. Cahier Du Cinema many years ago pointed out the Catholic overtones in his movies.

This may be neither here nor there, but I don’t quite think Liam may be an “all the way” Catholic anyway.

Liam met his late wife Natashs Richardson while doing a play together. She was married at the time but that did not stop her from leaving and divorcing her husband for Liam and then marrying Liam.

Ironically, apparently her first husband was married when Natasha met him and HE left HIS wife for Natasha and then married her. Then she left the guy for Liam. Oy Vey.

It may be gossip and inconsequential for some folks here------but I’m making the point that a TRUE Believing Catholic would never acquiese to and engage in immoral behavior like that.

May he has confessed and been absolved of that by his priest—I don’t know----just saying that what he engaged in was totally Anti-Catholic-Beliefs and Morality and is a Sin.
