It is well known in Hollywood, according to gossip, that Mel is Severely Bi-Polar.

If so, I pray for him and hope he gets the help he so desperately needs. But is he a Good Catholic and Christian? Heck no. :rolleyes:
 
I’ve gone into this site several times over the past couple of days but had a bit of “fun” today – saw Clark Gable in the movie “San Francisco” yesterday and I live in earthquake city. Decided to “google” him today and was surprised he was baptized Catholic – since he married 5 times I would think he wasn’t buried from the Church – BUT in checking various sites I found other very famous people also are/were Catholic – such as: Bob Hope - Betty Hutton - Gene Kelly - Steve McQueen - Mary Tyler Moore - Bob Newhart - Donald O’Connor - Gregory Peck - Perry Como – Gary Cooper – Bing Crosby – Fred Allen – Don Ameche – Rosemary Clooney – Jackie Gleason – Olivia deHaviland – Susan Hayward – Frank Sinatra – Gary Sinese – Lana Turner – Loretta Young!!! What do you think of that list???
 
Not to mention Ann Blyth, a very devout Catholic. She and her husband were awarded the rank of Lady and Knight of the Holy Sepulchre by Cardinal Cooke of NY in the early 1970s.
 
I wonder why Ann Blyth wasn’t mentioned unless somehow I “missed” her name – have added her name to my list – any others I missed???
 
I don’t know. I just knew about Ann Blyth from *Sally and St. Ann *and her singing with Bing Crosby on a Fr Peyton show. Sorry.
 
I don’t really know if Marty Stuart is Catholic. He is a Christian. The battle about politicians and pro-life issues is something different. Unless you were surprised that you disliked a fellow Christian! Instead of music, substitute political views? Of course, pro-life issues are much bigger that cultural issues of taste. I think that what you (all) are saying is some fellow Catholics are going against the Holy Spirit if you are not pro-life. People vote for candidates who are not pro-life. A lot of irony here. Who do we chastise? In the scheme of things in God’s world, I am not sure that He cares if we vote for pro-life candidates. If He asks us to, we will do what He says; does Jesus ask this of everyone? He does care that we are pro-life, in our decisions. It can be a list of don’ts. We need to lead lives that show our Faith in all areas of life. These catholic surprises mentioned, are people who don’t want to legislate laws that others seem to not be able to live by, even though they personally follow these laws in their heart. I don’t think that there are surprises the other way, the way of lip service to life, but that is what some Catholics might say of some ultra conservatives. Are they really pro-life. I think that I was surprised, if you are following me, at one time, to find about the Catholics who are Conservatives, like Pat Buchanan, etal. Great friends with Nixon … That still has me puzzled. We are talking about political philosophy. Music taste and political philosophy. I happen to be on the side of those who would like to make a law against killing babies in the womb. The trouble is that political philosophy is attached to a decision of voting, and, we are being asked to change that philosophy. I like Pat’s cultural war ideas, and, he sided with those concerned about international issues relating to employment, use of the military, fairness in many things. The Wall of China along the Rio Grande, just really crazy.

I recently found out that Martin Sheen got his stage name from Bishop Fulton Sheen. How cool is that?
 
Once upon a time I was going to start a thread like this called “Now let us praise famous men/women” stealing the title from an essay I was forced to read in a college English class the author’s name escaping me as I found it boring that was taken from a line from Sirach.
It is interesting to see who was born Catholic and who converted and to look at the effect they’ve had on world history and culture. I’ll give you an infamous convert on his death bed, Oscar Wilde died a Catholic. His two most Catholic essays are “De Profundis” and the “Ballad of Redding Gaol” and are quite worth reading.
A very interesting historical note: Herr Guttenberg, the fist person to publish the Bible in German was Catholic and it is a Catholic Bible.

Let me put it this way----he himself personally may not be Pro-Choice, but the Show he is on is Definitely Liberal and Anti-Conservative in tone. Like its progenitor, The Daily Show.👍

I watch his show quite a bit. And he does poke a lot of fun at people who are against gay marriage or abortion. Makes you think, what it is he is teaching kids in sunday school?

I don’t know. I read a few bio’s on her and some say she converted so her husband could have a “traditional Roman Catholic Wedding”. Race car driver Danica Patrack converted upon her marraige also. We’re at the mercy of the biography writers. If they are honest, we get an honest bio, if they are anti-catholic or not religious at all we may get their spin on it (and vice versa).

I like to think they fell in love with the faith like my wife did. She converted while she was pregnant.

Either that or he’s being sarcastic. I’m terrible at reading sarcasm (unless it’s blantently obvious). You can imagine how hard it is for me on here at times! :o

As a big film buff and as a devout Hitchcock fan, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Alfred Hitchcock, arguably the world’s greatest film director, was a Catholic.

I was also surprised to find out that Martin Sheen is a Catholic (though he is into liberation theology 😦 ). In fact, the name Martin Sheen is just his stage name. He got his last name “Sheen” from Archbishop Sheen.

Francis Ford Coppola is another one I was happy to say we have.

I’m a film buff so I love finding Catholics in the film business.

I always took his style to be cynical and sarcastic, not a slam.
