This might be a slight change of topic, but I read the late actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s funeral service was at a Catholic Church in New York? Was he a practicing Catholic? Could somebody shed some light on this?
Here’s an article about some of his religious beliefs: bustedhalo.com/features/the-gospel-according-to-philip-seymour-hoffman. Based on the article, he was apparently a believer in God who prayed, and was attracted to his sister’s Evangelical beliefs at one time but did not commit to them.

He was a baptized Catholic, and thus entitled to a Catholic funeral: patheos.com/blogs/deaconsbench/2014/02/catholic-funeral-for-philip-seymour-hoffman/ Please pray for his soul.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those most in need of Thy mercy. Amen.

A lot of fellow actors and directors who worked with the late PSH attended the funeral. I don’t think any of them are remotely religious, so I wonder what they thought of entering a Church and hear a sermon about God and afterlife. That must’ve been a bit odd.

What about well known sportscasters, Head coaches, Pro golfers?
Lot’s of New Yorkers with Italian or Irish surnames like Valvano.
McCarver,Tim(I think he is), McKeel(sp?)Shaun (I think he is) both went to CBHS in MEMPHIS.
The newest golf phenom is a JesuitHS graduate from Dallas.
Padraig Harrington is a good bet, but thats just profiling.
Vijay Singh is another high possibility though he is like all of us, not without baggage. 🤷

I would hesitate to lump everyone with an Irish or Italian surname as Catholic

I just found out that Don McLean is Catholic. (And that he wrote Vincent)

👍 UNDERSTOOD, that’s why there was a question mark-?-.
Our heritage begins with a name. Our name is usually a clue to our origin. The content of my question is more relative to sociology than archeology.
My apologies if the train of thought in my post offended anyone. PC?😊

Statistically valid I would guess…

Jon “Man of Faith” Murphy, a professional Mixed Martial Arts fighter out of Minersville, Pennsylvania is a Catholic (and a knowledgeable apologist who defends the Catholic faith on MMA forums). He fights at 6’3" and 260 pounds with a professional record of 6 - 4 - 0 and a tattoo of a Chi Ro on his arm. Not a bad guy to have on your side in a rumble or a friendly apologetic debate.

Elvis Costello was raised Catholic, and although it doesn’t sound like he still considers himself one, he speaks respectfully of his Catholic upbringing:
You were brought up Catholic?
Yes, I was. I don’t go to church, or have the beliefs I was brought up in. But I grew up just after the scare-you-out-of-your-wits era, and didn’t encounter any of the unfortunate people for whom, perhaps, the demands of the prohibitions were too great for their nature, and hence these horrendous abuses of the power that they had over children. I had friends who did experience it. But I won’t just fall in with the demonization of the clergy, because I have in my life kind experiences [with priests and nuns] I mean, nuns taught me to read, That was my fortune, and somebody else will have a totally different experience. And that’s the danger of making these broad statements, that ‘all those people over there, they’re all this thing.’

The actor in the controversial new Cadillac commercial (you can view it here: youtube.com/watch?v=XSky3o910s4) (well, it’s controversial nowadays, it wouldn’t have been 10 years ago) is Neil McDonough, who has been in Band of Brothers and Desperate Housewives.

McDonough is Catholic, and was replaced as a lead in the TV series Scandals because he refused to do explicit lovemaking scenes with Virginia Madsen, as he believes explicit scenes, even if done for a film, would be against his moral principles and would constitute cheating on his wife. He’s lost some roles and some serious money because of his religious beliefs: deadline.com/2010/03/no-sex-please-im-neal-mcdonough/

Frank Gorshin, known to my generation as the first TV Riddler on the Batman TV series was a lifelong Catholic of Croatian descent. He showed up on nearly every TV show in the 1960s and 1970s (including a role as a half-black, half-white alien on the original Star Trek series) and in numerous movies (including Where the Boys Are and That Darn Cat!), and was also known as an impressionist and comedian (frequently on Ed Sullivan, Steve Allen, Johnny Carson, et al.) He is buried in the Catholic Calvary Cemetery in his native Pittsburgh.

I saw Jim Gaffigan the comedian last night. He’s known for not cursing, etc - which was the case. His act is mostly about food - and hilarious. Unfortunately he makes some jokes about the Bible, and Christ directly. I was just reading that he considers himself Catholic, his wife is Catholic - I don’t think he means to be hurtful in any way. I posted on his Facebook page that he doesn’t need those “jokes”, and that they are offensive to some people, etc.

Mark Wahlberg

Michael Moore

Is Bill O’Reilly Catholic?

Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, for those Pharisees on here 😉

Bonus: people who are surprisingly Christian (Orthodox, Protestant, nondenominational)

Rob Dike (no idea if there are people on here like me who enjoy twisted facts and stuff on YouTube) By the way, I had to spell his name wrong due to the censors. It’s his last name you know

Rhett & Link (also on YouTube)

Tom Hanks apparently.

The musical duo twenty-one pilots

Michael Moore

Is Bill O’Reilly Catholic? …
Obnoxious as he can be, Bill O’Reilly is Catholic

Michael Moore on the other hand…I don’t think he could have done an honest confession for DECADES with the prevarcating (lying) movies he’s done
