RENO, Nev. — New survey results on the effect of Catholic radio show what Catholic radio operators have long known: The medium is having a positive impact on listeners, their parishes and the Church.

Many of my fellow teenagers don’t even realize AM radio exists 😦

A survey conducted 12 years ago indicated that 90% of the US audience for AM radio was age 35 or older. I suspect this hasn’t changed much since then. AM’s strength is a long distance signal, however, its music quality is poor compared to FM. Unless teenagers have changed markedly in the past 30 years, they care more for much music than they do talk radio. And during the past ten years, the growth of MP3 availability has been causing a reduction in hours listening to radio, across the board.

I don’t have any data on this, but I wonder if short, snappy podcasts wouldn’t be the best way for Catholic programming to reach teenagers?

Of course, the growth of old school radio stations broadcasting Catholic content is a good thing. An article in the Boise, Idaho diocesan newspaper mentions that five new priests in Omaha, Nebraska specifically credited the local Catholic radio station for helping them discover their vocations.

Dale, That would have been true of me as a teenager as well.

But teens don’t stay teens forever. Being over 35 myself now, I’m extremely grateful for Relevant Radio in my area. And since most of my generation got mostly Kumbaya sessions for religious education, AM talk radio still has a long future ahead of it, cutting edge or not.

For the younger generation, it doesn’t have to be AM radio. It’s on some satellite networks, plus there are some Catholic radio smartphone apps. I have one (even though I’m over 35).

It’s sure made an impact on my life–and I’m a grandma.

I listen all the time, even though I’m in a sort of fringe area (receptionwise…well, I’m in California, too… :D)

I wouldn’t have found these forums if I had not listened to Catholic Answers Lilve.

I’ve also been able to attend local activities because I’ve heard about them on Catholic radio.

I support my local station!

Catholic radio was great when I came back to the church in 97. I learned more in a month from catholic radio than I did in 12 years of ccd.
