Editor’s Note: Marie Collins of Ireland was appointed in 2014 as one of two survivors of clergy sex abuse to serve on Pope Francis’ Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors. She resigned from that position Wednesday, March 1. She wrote the following statement for NCR about her decision.
The last straw for me, on top of the refusal to cooperate on the Safeguarding Guidelines, has been the refusal, by the same dicastery, to implement one of the simplest recommendations the Commission has put forward to date.
Last year at our request, the pope instructed all departments in the Vatican to ensure all correspondence from victims/survivors receives a response. I learned in a letter from this particular dicastery last month that they are refusing to do so.
How sad that there are some within the walls of the Vatican that are refusing to all that they can for victims, abusers, and future children.

I’m not usually in the habit of shooting the messenger, but from the link, it is, after all, the National “Catholic” Reporter.

It could well be true, but I wouldn’t take them at their word for anything. It will have to be backed up by something more reputable, like the “Good NCR”, the National Catholic Register.

I think there is a resistance among the clergy to make changes based on the recommendation of the laity. In most cases, the clergy will do what’s best, but sometimes I think the laity has a good idea but gets ignored automatically simply because it came from the laity. The ideal is that recommendations should be considered based on their merits, regardless of where they came from. I don’t know if that’s the case here, but hopefully, our Pope will look into it.
