I know of a parish DRE who organizes a parish group for a Komen race every year. I heard her equate the support for abortion by contributing to Komen to the support for abortion in the payment of our income taxes.

The other side of the story for reference.

Yep, the OP opened a can of worms with this thread. Out will come the Catholics who will talk about the inconclusiveness of the link between BC and Abortion and that the their particular affiliate does not support PP (as if money weren’t fungible among organizations).

I’ve noticed that these Catholics focus on these points also to the exclusion of Komen’s public support for research that destroys embryonic life. They ignore the clear connections between the leadership of Komen and the leadership of PP.

When it comes to fighting BC, Komen is just the biggest game in town, not the only one. But the understandable attraction to the feeling of solidarity in standing with our sisters in that “sea of pink” is awfully seductive. Dare I say, even glamourous (the type of glamour that we’ve sworn to reject).

All of the rationalizations that one must undertake in use of individual conscience to justify participation in Komen ought to be the first indication that there’s something wrong.

Why does it fund PP, anyway? They’re not researchers, though they may sell the baby parts to the mad scientists Obama funds with our tax dollars. Why don’t they fund real scientists with real therapies?

Let’s say that you want to contribute money to finding the cure for cancer.

You can give money to Komen, who may or may not use a portion of it to fund Planned Parenthood (I think they do, FWIW).

Alternatively, you can give money to the American Cancer Society which is not under any such cloud.

Wrong! The American Cancer Society is worse. They fund embryonic stem cell research (experiments on humans who are then killed).

This is not so.

God Bless.

It is Susan G. Komen (just for anyone who might confuse with Susan B Anthony who was anti-abortion).

There are two Catholic “Theologians” who released a position paper on the “rightness” of donating to Susan G. Komen. They are dissidents - Hamel and Panicola - who have mislead many to believe it is ethically okay to give to Susan G. Komen. They are wrong and the National Catholic Bioethics Center agrees.

It is almost impossible to find a large medical or research associated organization that doesn’t support Planned Parenthood. Hate to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but…

Real Catholic Organizations - National Catholic Bioethics Center, Catholic Medical Association, Polycarp.org, One More Soul. There are more but we are definitely outnumbered.

We were outnumbered on fetal stem cell research and conservatives were outnumbered on global warming, especially the man-made kind, so remember that God is on our side. Someday, abortion will be totally debunked as how it’s portrayed as only destroying a blob of tissue or as “non-viable”, etc.

Why does it fund PP, anyway?
Susan Komen contracts with some Planned Parenthood facilities to provide breast screening. So its not actually funding PP, however, many in this thread would argue that the money PP gets from Komen frees up PP funds to do other activities.

I’ve heard that, but I understand our tax dollars don’t go straight to abortion, but to a public fund from which it’s drawn. It’s the same thing. Most can’t fight paying taxes, but we can have legislation banning the government from funding abortion, period.

Not just “many in this thread” but anyone who understands that money is fungible. Why is that a matter for such delicate dancing around? If Komen funded hate groups, but the money was only ear marked for the hate groups to do highway cleanups or the like, freeing up more money for the hate groups to print racist tracts, the Catholic churches would be screaming to the rafters about the evil of funding Komen. But since they only fund a group that kills babies, we get a big yawn or we get rationalizations for supporting Komen. Even Catholics have become desensitized to abortion. The enemy is so insidiously clever and gaining allies from among our ranks.

They’ve made us “reasonable” so that pro-life protesting, even with just prayers, seems a bit extreme. Our lukewarmness is mistaken for moderate behavior by us and so it serves them. The battles of too many men become a vicarious one through our favorite sports teams. Men have thus become effeminate, as being a man gets confused with displaying one’s heterosexuality–another victory of servants of The World…

The idea that Komen is funding Planned Parenthood via its contracts for breast cancer screening assumes that PP would provide the breast cancer screening without the PP funds. I am not sure that is true. Based on what I observed during the few years I worked for a small non-profit, programs which can’t find a funding source disappear. Without the Komen funding, PP chapters might not offer the screenings, which means no PP money would have been tied up in such a program. It is entirely reasonable to think that the Komen-PP connection does not free up money for PP, since no money would have been tied up in the absence of the Komen contracts.

Now, I admit I can’t prove the above scenario. My point is that the “money is fungible” argument regarding Komen and PP is equally hypothetical, with little supporting evidence.

However, I do think that PP benefits, from favorable publicity and the good will of their clients, by providing such screenings on behalf of Komen. And that alone is reason enough to oppose the Komen connection.

I’ve known about this for a long time now. A year or so ago I even posted a thread telling people not to buy stuff with the pink ribbon on it because the funds go to the Susan B. Komen Foundation which in turn donates money to the evil organization, Planned Parenthood.

Awfully hypocritical of them to be crusading against something that kills people but then give money to an organization that kills people.

But, Komen can get away with it by donning the self-righteous cloak of the anti-breast cancer crusade and make it out to be a women’s rights/health issue. In large part, that is how the abortion industry is justified, as a women’s rights/health issue and therefore absolutely sacrosanct.

It’s sick is what it is.

Actually, we are not “outnumbered” on these issues. No, not at all, we are simply silenced and mocked by the few who actually push this. The difference is that we are not willing to lie to make our point.

As long as the wackos, like most of the mainstream (progressive) news media, control the language and the reporting, this will never change.
