You stated that the Curia is mostly corrupt. If your tabloid journalist buddy has lead you to believe this without real evidence, then that’s a problem. It says in Sacred Scripture that scandals will come. That’s a given. But attachment to wanting to know the details is not a good thing, unless it leads us to much prayer and reflection, especially for those who may be causing scandal. And it’s important to pray for a Pope who will be wise and holy.

He is a highly ethical Catholic journalist. Very respected, too.

I think we can all agree that being hasty is not a good thing. Bad choices are often made in haste. We dont need that, that is for sure.

On the other hand, Cardinal Ratzinger was elected Pope in record time – after just four ballots. So haste is not always a bad thing.

But I agree that, at the present time, it definitely is. The risk of a bad choice now is very, very high, and the consequences of that bad choice could be very, very far-reaching.

I really think we should have a new Pope for Holy Week. If all the Cardinals are locked up, who is going to do the most important parts of Holy Week services/Masses? There’s Passion/Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday (HUGE) and Good Friday (Passion Reading AND Stations of the Cross held at the Coliseum). Then there’s Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday.

I don’t want them to rush…but I don’t want them to take 30 days either!

More important that the right person is in the job, not the the person is in it by a certain time. Many questions need to be answered, and from it appears many questions are being asked; about the governing, homsexual clergy, blackmaling. These things nned to be vented befoe the next pope takes the Seat of Peter. Holy Week will take place even if there is noone on the Chair of Peter.

I think this next Pope will beat that record. It could even be a first ballot situation. I get the feeling that the Cardinals are doing a lot of the work right now, outside the conclave. LOL nobody wants to be locked up for an extended period of time no matter how awesome the room is. Especially if you are elderly! I think the conclave will be a one day event. I could certainly be wrong about that but I get the feeling a lot of research, socializing, and discussion is happening right now.

Well it’s important to note that all of the work always takes place outside of the conclave.

The only thing done in conclave is voting, not vetting, not discussions. Only the balloting…

I don’t see that there’s any obvious choice to succeed Benedict, though, so I imagine it will be at least a few days before the consensus begins to gel around a few candidates.

My instinct is that, if we get a Pope quickly, it will be because the curialists and progressives among the electors forged an early alliance and got one of “their guys” in, for fear of being quickly shut out of the possible candidates for lack of consensus. Deus avertat! Pray instead for a long, careful, deliberative, and prayerful conclave.

I remember watching the post-conclave coverage after Pope Benedict was elected. What had solidified his election was the homily he delivered at JPII funeral Mass on relativism. Yes, he was the favored, but his homily really solidified that in the eyes of the cardinal electors.

I’m expecting 4-5 days. Ratzinger was pretty much at the top of everyone’s list when that one started…there is no such obvious choice this time. True, the Cardinals are spending a lot of time debating and discussing right now, but there are no clear or obvious voting blocs. And they do have discussions during the Conclave, just not within the Sistine Chapel…during lunch, before the morning sessions, late at night, etc…these are when things happen.
