Do you mean there are no clear/obvious candidates? Because there are definitely at least some clear/obvious voting blocs, most prominently the Bertone- and Sodano-led curialist faction.
That’s the alliance I am most afraid of. I hope the Cardinals take all the time they need. It’s the bigget decision they will make in their life.

I really think we should have a new Pope for Holy Week. If all the Cardinals are locked up, who is going to do the most important parts of Holy Week services/Masses? There’s Passion/Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday (HUGE) and Good Friday (Passion Reading AND Stations of the Cross held at the Coliseum). Then there’s Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday.

I don’t want them to rush…but I don’t want them to take 30 days either!
I would rather they take their time than rush. A senior cardinal who isn’t locked in the conclave can celebrate Holy Week. I know it’s a hard thing for us when we are so used to everything happening so quickly because of technology. But we need to try to be patient.

Regarding the holy week liturgies, I suppose they can always ask the one in castel gandolfo to do it.

Last time I heard, Bertone was pushing Dolan.
Intrade gives Dolan less than a 2% chance. They give highest betting odds to Scola with a 25% chance and Turkson comes in second with an 18% chance.

Breaking news: This afternoon there will be a vote on the date of the conclave. Announcement by 6pm GMT.

EWTN’s is reporting that the Vatican has said it will announce the date in 4 hours. (Its Friday 9AM eastern time right now)

What odds would they have given Wyotila or Roncalli?

Perhaps. But the Church needs to learn how to use (and deal with) the media more effectively.

Perhaps. But, the church needs to learn to use the media more effectively. You’ve got half the eyes of the world on the Vatican, and a media that is willing to grant respectable coverage…all they’re asking for is a process story. Take advantage.

Agree completely. It’s an opportunity for the Vatican.
Because of varies scandals, the Vatican’s credibility has taken some blows. This is a time of opportunity to do some reparation and show a willingness to take necessary and healthy reforms and renew.

For those looking for the full Vatican statement, it’s right here:

Eighth General Congregation This Evening Will Vote On Date of Conclave

So we should find out by early this afternoon / late this morning (U.S. time – depending what time zone you are in).

Fr. Lombardi says it definitely will not be tomorrow or Sunday, but it will probably be Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday.

By this time next week, we may just have a new pope.
