Swearing a sin?

But now put you also all away: anger, indignation, malice, blasphemy, filthy speech out of your mouth. (Colossians 3:8)
Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. (James 3:10)
Those are just a couple verses from Holy Scripture. I would not use profanity. It seems to be against what God wants for us. We are supposed to be Holy…separated…from this world. If we’re cussing, how is that being separate from the world when they’re doing the same thing? I like this verse to show us what we should be saying and thinking about.

For the rest, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever modest, whatsoever just, whatsoever holy, whatsoever lovely, whatsoever of good fame, if there be any virtue, if any praise of discipline, think on these things. (Philippians 4:8)

I am so happy for you. I am glad that you think it is acceptable, and have decided to talk down to people that do find it offensive. I suppose you would have no problem with your children using those same words language publicly then?

It’s a sin, more or less venial, against the virtue of prudence. Cussing occasionally isn’t necessarily, but if it’s a regular part of your vocabulary I would recommend cleaning up your language. Keep in mind that just because a sin is venial doesn’t mean it isn’t an offense against God.

Matthew 12:36
But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it in the day of judgment.

James 3:7-13
For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race. But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way. Does a fountain send out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water? Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce fresh.

Seems that St Paul is saying that what we hear come out of people’s mouths is an apt indicator of what is in their heart - that cursing and foul language simply will not come from the mouths of good people praising God.

100 % agree with you.

I really think this is an important point. The point here is that careless words are something we are held accountable for. “Oh man, I hate Lebron James.” is a careless sentence. It is using a word “hate” to completely discredit another human being.
“Did, you see the game last night? Lebron played like “S”.”
Here is a sentence with an opinion not of the person in general but a description of the quality of job they did.

Now taking Matthew 12:36 as a guide, I would feel more comfortable being held accountable for the second sentence that includes a swear word than the first which does not.

Arguably the subject in itself is “careless” but it is being used to make a point. Again, it is what the INTENT of the words used that matters. Not the words. These are not incantations, they are slang, that changes.

Where I really side with the others here about certain words is when it has to do with Holy things or the name of God himself. This is a million times more offensive and yet vastly more common in society and on TV.
BTW if anyone wants to look up comedian Tim Hawkins “christian swear words” it is hilarious and rather clean.

There is a vast difference between immoral and impolite. I, of course, teach my kids to be polite.
And I don’t talk down to anyone who finds words offensive. It is perfectly understandable and fine. And I detest public swearing. People should learn to control the words that come out of their mouths. It violates a social contract. It is why I can say feces on CAF but have to type out the phrase the “s” word.

There are sinful words to use. Profaning the Lord’s name. speaking incantations or curses. Words of worship directed to other gods, words of curses designed to bring harm to another.

These are sinful. Very sinful. As are any words that are uttered with hatred. ANY words. that is the point of the instruction against careless speech.

Why not be the good example?
Honor God in how you speak. Gain mastery over that tongue and there won’t be regrets.
Lots of people say stuff that’s not even swearing, they regret saying it, and can’t take it back.
