In another thread, there seemed to be a feeling that swimming with those of the opposite sex is sinful - what are your opinions?

I have never heard that it is sinful. I have swam my whole life and while some of the suits are inappropriate, I know of no sin associated with the act of swimming.

(Bless me, Father, for I have swam?)

Goodness I hope not!! I do not feel that is at all sinful - IF you are wearing modest swimwear. Naturally when you are wearing something skimpy merely to show off your body in a sexual way-that is sinful. But for the average person who swims for the simple enjoyment and physical health benefits there is no harm in doing so even with mixed male/female company.

You should have asked:

“Is swimming with members of the opposite sex in lingerie a sin?”

I mean, let’s be honest, there really is no difference between what a bikini shows and lingerie.

We are water-folks here in the Natural State of Arkansas. Our lakes are gorgeous, and we USE them! Boating, swimming, just playing in the water – our local lakes have natural sand-bars where everyone ties up and just hangs out in the shallow water, playing volleyball and relaxing. I’ve spent more hours praying on the lake than I can count… it is so peaceful.

Our neighborhood also has a pool, and we use the pool. I have many orthopedic issues, and water is the way I can exercise without straining my fragile joints. Our teen son swims every day. It is great exercise.

Our parish has swim parties for the youth, teens, servers, etc. In other parishes, our priest would come to the lake and unwind, just bobbing (when there is not a sand bar, you can also hang out in the water by wearing a life jacket and just kinda floating around).

When I read the other thread re: flirting where there was quite a bit of “mee-toos” on the thought that swimming is somehow sinful – I was perplexed. Glad to know I’m not the only web-footed Catholic J

Maybe swimming can lead to Sin? With the bikinis that women wear now, some of them barely have anything on. I live in Hawaii so we have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world that we all share. There is a health club here that was not co-ed. Women one day and men the other. The gym I workout at now is co-ed and yes I can see how having it co-ed could be a vice to sin. They have a swimming pool and I saw a couple in the pool hugging and kissing in front of other members and the management did nothing. How disrespectfull of them. Its a pool that other members use for therapy and excersice and they used it for their own pleasure. I would not complain if management went to alternating days. IMHO, If people use swimming as a healthy activity and not for meeting the opposite sex then swimming together may not be a Sin.

Dear friends

Swimming is not a sin, never will be and never was. Period.

Whoever posted up ‘Bless me father for I have swam’ that was hilarious. I’d love to know what a Priest makes of that, should anyone even go and confess such a thing! He’d be laughing for weeks I’d imagine!:rotfl:

I am not even going to consider this any longer, it’s a sheer wastage of time the good Lord has granted me!

Fill your minds with something productive to ponder.

God Bless you and much love and peace to you

Teresa

Swimming may very well not be a sin but wearing some of the things we try to pass off as a swim suits is! Have you been to the public pool or beach lately? Have you seen the latest swim fashions? :bigyikes:

My :twocents: , thanks!

Not only is it not a sin, but the wonderful feeling of jumping into a cool body of water on a hot summer’s day is a great metaphor for how it will feel when we finally get to jump into the River of Life after our stretch in Purgatory! 👍

Sounds like a case of scruples. In these cases, the person sees almost everything as sinful.

What would pennance be? Two Hail Mary’s and the backfloat.

If swimming is a sin then what about jogging or rollerblading or bicycling?

Swimming isn’t sinful. Perhaps the fashions that some people wear could be taken as a near-occasion for sin, but seeing how swimming and the participants are a cross-section of society, that’s not surprising. If I was a young person again, I would do my utmost to ignore the exposed flesh and enjoy the activity of water volleyball, swimming with friends, etc.

Amen. That’s the problem. Of course swimming itself is not sinful. How would it be?? The problem of sin arises with the “suits” that people wear when swimming with members of the opposite sex.

Ladies: can’t you see that bikinis are really just waterproof bra and panties, except more revealing?

Men: should you really be wearing (waterproof) boxers in front of any women besides your wife?

Swimming is not sinful; but as with many things, it can become sinful under certain conditions. If you swim with your spouse in your own pool-- heck, go naked-- who cares! That’s not sinful. If you’re swimming with members of the same sex, with no reasonable chance that the opposite sex will be around, no problem! But if you’re over the age of 10, there’s no reason to be flopping around nearly-naked in a tub of water with nearly-naked members of the opposite sex.

Now, let the “puritan” insults begin . . .

Considering that 99.99% of the women in any cross section of America (or just about anywhere else) look anything but sexy in a skimpy bikini (that leaves 1 in ten thousand for those who can’t do math), perhaps we are making a bigger problem than exists? and given the fact that out of all swim suits, few are the skimpy bikini type, aren’t we carrying it a bit far?

Of course, I live in Oregon as in, “what comes after two days of rain in Oregon?”

So there really aren’t a lot of bikini babes running around loose out here. Maybe it’s different elsewhere…

Oh, the answer?

Monday…

Yes. I see no problem wearing a men’s bathing suit (not a speedo) swimming in public. As far as bikinis, I have never approved or allowed any clothing that reveals the midriff.

**Gee…I hope not! Swimming is one of my favorite forms of exercise. I love my water-fit classes, and love to float around in the pool! **
