Swiss-born theologian attacks papal authority in new book
Tuebingen, Germany - Controversial Swiss-born Catholic theologian Hans Kueng on Wednesday launched a new book attacking papal authority and calling on rank-and-file Catholics to seize control of the church from its clerical masters.

The book Can the Church Still Be Saved? was set to go on sale in Germany Thursday, coinciding with the worldwide release of a book by Pope Benedict XVI titled Jesus of Nazareth - Part II.

Kueng, who has lived most of his life in Tuebingen, Germany, tangled with church authorities in the 1970s. His 1983 book Infallible? attacked the 1870 proclamation of papal infallibility. He was stripped of his licence to teach but remains a priest.

Not the first screwy idea to come out of Tubingen. I doubt the location is really a coincidence. The Tubingen School was essentially an attempt to take the supernatural out of christianity, to suppress the very idea of God making a special revelation to man.

The apple doesn’t fall very far from the tree.
 
It probably won’t be nearly as good as the attack on papal authority another Swiss theologian published 500 years ago.
 
I have a feeling Hans Kung isn’t going to be a particularly serious threat for the mainstream of Catholicism. Let the inquisition deal with him and move along. 😃
 
Several decades ago many dissenting Catholics were his disciples, revering because he frocefully espoused dissenting views. But you don’t hear about him in later years. When he talks about laypeople seizing control of churches, he seems to have gone even further over the edge, perhaps partly because he has become overlooked.
 
Doesn’t really surprise me that Kung is still calling for “reform.”:rolleyes:

I get the impression that formally excommunicating him would only give him credibility among anti-Catholics. As he stands now he’s like the eccentric relative who shows up at family gatherings spouting bizarre theories that are summarily dismissed.
