It’s a natural progression; reversion to paganism is the final step in a rebellion against the true faith, which is the Catholic faith. (I am speaking about those countries that were traditionally Catholic and formed part of “Christendom”.)

In some countries the progression has been:

Catholicism → Protestantism → Secular liberalism → Paganism

In others, such as France, the “Protestant” step was largely skipped:

Catholicism → Secular liberalism → Paganism

Like it or not, the rejection of the Catholic faith was the first step down a very, very slippery slope.
