VATICAN CITY, October 18 (CNA/EWTN News) .- Mixing old with new, a progress report on the synod of bishops on the New Evangelization was delivered in Latin, the ancient language of the Church.

“Many Synod Fathers called for a new Pentecost … of seeing the action of the Church today, enlivened by the Holy Spirit, as a reflection of the energy in the early Church when the apostles set out to bring the first disciples to the Lord,” Cardinal Donald Wuerl of Washington, D.C., said late in the afternoon on Oct. 17.

“Many of the fathers spoke of the similarity between those early days of the Church and our moment in time today”…

Yes, but what does that mean in practice? It seems we all want the same thing, but we have to make some real progress.

Some propositions:

A completely revitalized and relatively standardized catechetical program for children in which orthodoxy is the consideration before all else
A completely revitalized and relatively standardized religious education program for young adults and adults in which orthodoxy is the consideration before all else
An instituted acolyte program in every diocese
A genuine assessment of our liturgical situation, good or bad
A commitment to avoid at all costs anything that would weaken the faith or make us look, for lack of better words, “cheesy”/mega church-ish
I won’t mention priestly/sister vocations since I think we now know what works and what doesn’t
I would ask the Holy See to consider a lowering of the required age for permanent deacons a bit
