Oh! My Scripture class coming in handy lol!Why are the gospels of Saint Matthew, Saint Mark, and Saint Luke called the Synoptic Gospels? :bible1:
Deuteronomy 17:6
6 On the evidence of two witnesses or of three witnesses he that is to die shall be put to death; a person shall not be put to death on the evidence of one witness.
So also our Lord maintained that two or three would establish the truth of a dispute, and that a group of two or three gathered in His name testified to His presence.Deuteronomy 19:15
15 “A single witness shall not prevail against a man for any crime or for any wrong in connection with any offense that he has committed; only on the evidence of two witnesses, or of three witnesses, shall a charge be sustained.
Matthew 18:16
16 But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses.
Thus, two or three agreeing witnesses - synoptic Gospels - established the truth of the New Covenant and testified to the arrival and presence of the long awaited Messiah.Matthew 18:20
20 For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”
I believe because Luke (and Matthew, which contains 90% of what Mark wrote on) used Mark and Q as a guide (Mark having been written before the other gospels).Does anybody have any thoughts about Mark and Luke’s Gospels overlapping because they travelled together and shared the same material?
Plus John was the only Apostle of the four, though some of the other Apostles wrote Epistles.Think of “optic”; they are seen with as with one eye.
Meaning that they outline much of the same narrative story in the same way, while John, written later, includes some additional information besides what already existed at the time.
