I was watching Rod Parsley this morning and he stated in Matt 16:18 Jesus actually pointed to himself when he made reference to the Rock?

Come again? Where does scripture even say Jesus was talking about himself or better yet, pointed to himself when he spoke to Peter?

I have noticed this position is being said by many fundamentalist and some Protestants?

Sounds like pure conjecture.
I tend to ignore people named after herbs:)

😃 Blessings Jon. Don’t get me wrong, I watch EWTN,but at times I stop the channel when a t.v. preacher says something, which catches my attention.
Ah, I know it. I was just poking fun, because these guys come up rather often here, usually by Catholics.
When I was in high school, my Lutheran pastor dad used to watch some guy from the Philly area - he had a terrible hair piece is all I remember. Dad used to sit and laugh and laugh, because the guy had no recognizable theology, no thought process recognizable by any reasonably well catechized layman. Dad said it was good comedy. 😛

Geee…you are rare as an ex-Protestant because most Protestants I know will merely deny it even if they know the text is obvious. Do you think it is pride? 🤷
I am a revert and I did not origionally leave the church out of animosity. I wanted a change of pace. As a single guy there was no place for me there. I did a lot of dating in my new church but I sensed that something wasn’t right. I was compromising the message of Christ. So I returned,.

What always gets me is at the end of these shows and The pastors are always asking for donations, Then they throw out the blanket statements about “Someone at home, I can see you are sick and need to be healed, I am sending a Healing annointment from God to you” Binny Hinn was the worse… Or when the Heal people on stage whats up with that…

Watch from 2min on its gets a little wild…

You are right it makes no literary sense at all. What I am curious to know where one can assume Jesus even pointed to himself? :ehh:
Without them trying to imply that He pointed to Himself, their ‘theory’ doesn’t hold water. It leaks like a sieve. They know that there is no way, literally, to come to their faulty conclusion without a little ‘poetic license’ added to the text.

I think with most of the televangelists out there, there is always more ‘show’ than substance in their preaching. Unfortunately, there are far too many poorly catechized people in their audience that really don’t know very much about the Bible, so they’ll believe them because they’re impressed by the ‘smoke & mirrors’ that make them look like they’re actually preaching the truth. Those people are probably sincerely looking for God, but they’re not likely to really find Him there. There’s a lot more of the philosophy of P.T. Barnum in those ‘shows’ than there is any truth about Jesus Christ.

Obviously Jesus can’t appoint someone the Vicar of Christ without, in some sense, talking about himself. So it’s not totaly out of line to imagine that Jesus pointed to himself when he said “rock.” Because really, the coolest thing about being appointed the Vicar of Christ is being appointed the Vicar of Christ.

Charitably, the best I can come up with is that Rod Parsley is too starstruck by Jesus to comprehend what Jesus says about Peter.

Amen! Welcome back. 👍

Well…if Rod Parsley wishes to make such a contention, then he will also provide us his certified bona fides as a Greek scholar in language, linguistics, and grammar. The original text does not agree with him.

From Pastor Parsley’s infallible ability to fill in the blanks in scripture, he appears to believe that our Lord was actually pointing at him when He spoke.

I remember seeing him on tv with these clips from Revivals he was at and omg, He would move his hands and waves of people would fall down… He and Benny Hinn have super powers or something…I always questioned these things at my old church.
Lol, Benny Hinn. Ever since I saw a video on youtube with one of his revivals synched with the “Let the Bodies Hit the Floor” song I can’t stop laughing everytime I see him on TV.

They, fundamentalist protestants, have to believe that Jesus was talking about himself in order to deny the primacy of Peter and the foundation of the true and visible Church. I just don’'t understand how a person can read “Thou art Cepha, and upon this Cepha I will build my Church” and believe that Jesus is addressing himself or some invisible church. I was a Southern Baptist and I do not recall ever having this passage of scripture even addressed. So kudos to Rod Parsley for even broaching the topic, though he is completely incorrect.
That’s just him being illiterate.

As a Baptist, I understood very well that Jesus was referring to Peter. And I understood that to mean that Peter would be the founder of the Christian Church.

What wasn’t discussed was Apostolic succession.

I saw that video…I cracked up so bad…, I think I will have to youtube that clip again today:p

In the world of self serving, personal interpretation, you can end up making the Bible say what you want it to say…

sometimes it’s get even more wacky

They seriously should put a laugh track to his show and put it on Comedy Central.

There are so many different opinions on this vital issue. And many other issues have many different interpretations. I think that if Jesus could do it over again He would have created one infallible teaching authority to get everything straight and we could follow him.

What is funny, of course, is that this is an example of “oral tradition” being used to interpret Scripture:D
