Sometimes I also wonder if people such as Rod Parsley are really there for God or to make the quick and easy big bucks? 🤷
Exactly. I am not judging Rod Parsley individually, it just makes me suspicious when someone makes a great deal of money off of preaching. Makes me feel as though there priorities may not be right. Again, I don’t know, just an initial gut reaction I have when I see these guys.

I feel the same way my friend.

I was watching Rod Parsley this morning and he stated in Matt 16:18 Jesus actually pointed to himself when he made reference to the Rock?

Come again? Where does scripture even say Jesus was talking about himself or better yet, pointed to himself when he spoke to Peter?

I have noticed this position is being said by many fundamentalist and some Protestants?

Sounds like pure conjecture.
How does he know Jesus was talking about himself, or talking about himself?

Nothing in the text suggests it. It is nothing more than an assumption.

I borrowed a DVD from the local library the other day called “On the Early Church: Conquering the Gates of Hell”.

It is published by Zondervan/Focus on the Family.

In the title chapter, they go to Caesarea Philippi, to the temple of Pan. Apparently, the place was known, with many other sites, as the “gates of hell” due to the mythology regarding the pagan religion.

What the host then insinuates, by a very clever twisting of the chronology of the Scripture, is that Christ was saying he would build his Church on the rock next to/on top of the pagan site and the “gates of hell” shall not prevail against it. In this line of thought, the host then insinuates not only that the Apostles were thoroughly ashamed of Jesus at this juncture, but that they had to be prodded into even acting on the faith of Jesus’ message. It TOTALLY deracinates St. Peter from his actual position and overall adds an element where competition in theology takes on a 3rd enemy.

In other parts of the DVD, they contrast pagan practices of the day with Jesus’ miracles and claims.

I was watching this thinking, “ooh, Devil is smart in how he engages in propaganda”. On the surface it seems all happy, cheerful and historically sound. Under the surface, it opens the door to outright refutation of the Gospel and the entirety of the legitimate nature of the Church.

When I watch “Christian” programming, I generally try to approach it with a few views which sometimes requires multiple views of the same thing- if such an ability is available in the medium. What I saw in the DVD was outright disturbing. It provides fuel for atheists, agnostics, muslims, etc. It is like sugar water to a starving man. Dude needs vegetables, meat and bread eventually.

The primacy of St. Peter and the Apostolic succession needs to be vehemently defended, for once that is lost in the individual- all is lost, for having denied the Vicar of Christ, and turning to one’s own ways- it is the first step off the narrow path. There are only two paths and one is broad and leads to destruction.

This interpretation ignores everything else that is going on. It ignores that Jesus changed Peter’s name and his name just happens to mean rock:rolleyes:. I have never heard an explanation for this change of name. It ignores that not only does Jesus rename Peter but He gives him the Keys to heaven. They focus in on only one thing rock apart from the context that it is being presented.

Exactly; they can’t even properly espouse their view from a perspective of sola scriptura because it becomes plainly clear when that principle is properly employed. It becomes sola part of scriptura… which, well, ain’t scriptural. lol.

Yeah I don’t see why they need to ask for donations all the time. Really they should just not ask for donations on the show and have a 1-800 number or something at the end saying something along the lines of “If you would like to donate to such and such please call…”.
