Is there any more word on how things are progressing for the Traditional Anglican Communion and intercommunion with the Catholic Church? I know these things can take years. Pope B XVI seems to be their best hope yet for this to occur in terms of that fact that he is sympathetic and conservative.

Not in my neck of the woods. Do you follow the ACA/TAC website?

I’m dubious, as may be recalled.

Hello GKC,

I peek in from time to time but not much is happening. I know this can take a lot of time. I certainly suspect that they will not get all they want. TAC having what appear to be valid orders from a Catholic point of view may help but having Bishops who are divorced ex Catholics may not. This last one presents a sticky issue as does politics with the 77 million member Anglican Communion.

It is my understanding that all of the TAC bishops (and their Archbishop) have agreed to step aside if Rome requests it or if their presence is a stumbling block to unity. If that is the case, then the TAC bishops will not likely be a problem. However, there are likely a number of TAC priests who were formerly Roman Catholic priests and at least some of those are now married… THAT is likely to cause heartburn at the Vatican.

I saw a report this weekend that a bishop in the Church of England (maybe have been the Bishop of Rochester, had an Arabic name) had gone to Rome to plead the TAC’s case for unity. That is absolutely all I know about this.

Peace, Charles Wackerman

I have heard the same, re: the supposed willingness of the TAC bishops. The point about former RC priests is pertinent, esp. since ++Hepworth, the primate of the TAC, is such.

It is odd if the CoE Bishop of Rochester, +Michael Nazir-Ali, was taking a hand in any of this, the TAC not being a part of the official world Anglican Communion.

I’m a Continuing Anglican, which is what the TAC is, generically. I’ve followed this story for 10 years or so. I’m extremely doubtful that anything meaningful, in the sense of ultimate corporate unity, has been, is, or will be taking place. But I’m certainly interested in any info. I could be wrong.

The orders of the TAC are, in general, of the same nature as the orders in the majority of the Continuum. That is, they would, by logic, be seen as valid, but illicit, due to the infusion of OC/PNCC lines into the Anglican Communion beginning in 1932. The TAC, and the Continuum generally, manifesting the proper intent, form and matter in consecration/ordination, and with identifiable episcopal lines from Churches Rome does recognise as possessing such orders, would, logically, possess such orders themselves. But I know of no formal statement from Rome that this logical conclusion is one that they hold, including with respect to the TAC.
