Hello,

I’m a devout catholic (in some aspect like I went to church regularly and almost never missed a prayer every night since I was 16 yrs old and now I’m over 40) but I made some serious mistakes in my life and I need your advice.

I was in a church choir group and met and married my first wife, a catholic. She later divorced me. Then two years later, I remarried a non-catholic wife and therefore no religious ceremony at all. My 1st wife then asked the Catholic church to remove the Matrimony oath and was successful (the church also sent me a questionair to hear from my side but I did not believe the church would consider such case as this, so it would be just a waste of time. Then the church removed the Matrimony after not hearing from my side). Because of this, I also received a letter from the church saying that I also was removed from that oath. But I’ve never went to a confession since being divorced by first wife and thus never took a communion (for the last 7 years). Then more than 5 yrs later, I was divorced by the second wife, a non-catholic, as well. I had one daughter with each of my ex-wife.

I’ve must have done something wrong thus failed in two marriages. Therefore I’m thinking about doing a confession and hopefully I could take the Communion.
  1. Am I allowed to take the Communion after I do a confession?
  2. If I’m remarrying with another non-Catholic wife (the Bible even said it is not good for a man to live alone, right? Why non-catholic? because every catholic woman I met wanted the church ceremony but I was afraid the priest would not do it for me, so I just turned away to avoid any trouble later on, etc… my mistake, right?), and assume that she does not want to become a Catholic, etc…, what should I do to avoid the sin of marrying a non-catholic or “affair” sin?
Please advise. Thanks.

Hi

Im a catholic from the uk and i know of many other storys just like yours. So firstly the catholic church i know should and will accept you to take communion once again commuinion is a celebration and you should have that right as a catholic to recieve commuinion once again as the only sin you have commited is to love another woman and i most sure that god and the church see that. Others on these forums will say different, but please do take communion and do go to confession it can only help.
Knowing that love is present in your marriage is enough to go back to your church to confession and recieve the gift of commuinion again a gift which is also of love.

Remember that the church i know today is a modern church and should/must accept as i like to say ONCE A CATHOLIC ALWAYS A CATHOLIC.

May god bless you and your marriage.
Joe

If you make a good confession, meaning that you confess all serious sins, including the adultery you committed with your second wife, you will be free to receive communion.

As a Catholic, canon law requires you be married according to the rules of the Church unless you get specific approval from your bishop to do otherwise. What are afraid of that you don’t want the priest know about?

What you must do is lay out all of the facts surrounding your marriages to your parish priest and let him help you discern what you need to do to be restored to full communion with the Church. It is only after you are in full communion with the Church that you will be free to receive Holy Communion.

As you note, your first marriage has been declared null by the competent authority.

It is a simple paperwork exercise to get your second marriage declared null for lack of form * if you wish to marry again.

A Catholic may marry a non-Catholic in the Catholic Church with permission from the bishop, which is fairly common.

As always there are details in matters of this sort which are private and should not be on the forum. While we can offer general principles, one must go to a priest to discuss those things pertinent to the specific case. However, this case looks fairly straight forward, and should go forward fairly easily.*

My advice is to copy and paste this verbatim to the CAF apologists. Perhaps Fr. Serpa can clear things up for you. If it is as you say, it does not sound like a complicated issue.
