If the SSPX priests are reunited with the Church, then they won’t be considered disobedient anymore, will they? And if you want evidence of liturgical abuses, YouTube has plenty of examples.
You are tiptoeing around the answer, show me the evidence of pagan liturgical dances being in vogue in the Catholic churches. Then if the SSPX priests will be in full communion and you will still have evidence of pagan liturgical dances at that time then you will have a point.

Here’s a recent event in which it appears that the dance/skating is featured as a sort of procession at the beginning of Mass. The music sounds like a type of carnival music…I’d advise turning down the sound if you view the video:

I have two reactions to the video an intellectual one and a gut one. My gut reaction is yuck!! I do not like, it is not part of my culture nor of my personal preferences, I do not want to see it in my parish.

My intellectual reaction is 🤷 Intellectually I can see that is aligned with the local culture, it is not pagan, it is not part of the liturgy, and the deacon is the one that appropriately brings the lectionary onto the altar.

I did not intend to infer that the video is pagan. It’s more of a secular/carnival cultural kind of thing, by the appearance, and as such, not really suited for the celebration of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, but that’s just me.

I agree; any kind of entertainment spectacle, if it is in the context of the Holy Mass, is sacrilegious. Whether in a Brazilian cultural milieu or not, this banalizes the sacred Mass and reduces it to a carnival. At least the girl on the platform didn’t fling the Lectionary down to the deacon, which I half suspected would be the case. Passing it along via the grinning barefoot acrobat/clown was bad enough.

One needn’t be fluent in Portuguese to get the gist of what one of the most recent YouTube commenters had to say about it: “Que lastima… horrível… ridículo… Não tem nada de Católico.”
Amen!

That isn’t a Mass.

It is a novena at the Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida, the patroness of Brazil on her feast day.

The novena was done in the style of the Brazillian Carnival which is held 46 days before Easter. Carnival in Brazil is the equivalent of our Fat Tuesday in New Orleans. Both were Catholic in origin, the last day before lent when you used up the rest of your animal fat before the penitential period of Lent.

My understanding is that Carnival is epic in proportion, that the entire nation comes to a standstill for the whole week. So the Brazillians apparently used the Carnival as a vehicle to honor Our Lady. Not my style, then I’m not Brazillian, but I say good for them for taking what is the secular corruption of a Catholic celebration and turning it back toward God and Our Lady.

But the video has nothing to do with Mass.

Thanks…good to know that it isn’t a Mass. The bible being help up by the girl (is it a bible?) caused me to think it was a Mass. It’s still awful, though…really awful. For a Carnival celebration to enter into a Church is just sad. But I’m glad to know it’s not a Mass.

Cristiano, I’m not saying that having the SSPX priests back in full communion will magically end all new age/pagan/ experimental etc. abuses. I’m predicting that one would never, ever see such things in a Mass celebrated by a (present or reconciled) SSPX priest…or any priest who cherishes the EF Mass, for that matter.

I’ll still go with the quote by the Brazilian YouTube poster, who certainly must be aware that it’s a Novena and not a Mass. And y’all are right, it isn’t clear which it is from the video alone, and it is inside of a Roman Catholic Cathedral. Out in the public square, or in the street, might be a different story.

At least the barefoot acrobat/clown didn’t pass the book along using his toes, which I also half expected.

Carnival was Catholic when it started. They have taken it back.

Carnival was a simple get-together with family and friends to celebrate the end of Ordinary Time and to use up meat and fat before Lent. So they threw a party. Eventually towns and villages go into a communal celebration and now it is epic in Brazil.

You have to be Brazillian to appreciate it. Its not like some random pumpkin festival in some town in New England or some cheap traveling carnival with funnel cakes and the guy who guesses your weight. It is an amazing nationwide spectacle.

Would we take offense if laides with white faces and kimono’s entered a Church for a novena celebration on the feast of the patroness of Japan? What about the Aztec Dancers in front of the Cathedral in Mexico City or Los Angeles on the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and all the ethnic festivities which surround that?

Again, not my style, but we also didn’t see the rest of the video, only the opening. I’m not defending what is in the video. I’m just pointing out that we shouldn’t be so quick to assume and to judge.

They are joyously venerating Our Lady for crying out loud! And at no small expense it would appear. Let’s at least give them that much before we jump down their throats and start emailing the Bishop of Rio.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program. 😉

The sarcasm really isn’t needed.

And it really isn’t fair for us to judge them based on our cultural standards.

People bring chickens into Cathedrals in some parts of the world to offer to the priests. That’s all they have. But we would never do that here in the US or the UK.

I mean this in all sincerity and charity. You guys need to put down the Gregorian Chant, step away from the thurible and lighten up. 😛

At the end of the day it is 2500 miles from where I live, on another continent. I’m not wasting my time getting all bent about it. It’s their own novena, not mine. Who cares how they do it? Not me. I have better things to do. 🤷

And they are venerating Mary. 👍

-Tim-

I’m sure those in Brazil who attended the Carnival Novena to Our Blessed Mother in the Cathedral will appreciate your defense, but I’m still not buyin’ it. I still think it’s really awaful. But I’ll not post further on it, as any response will only encourage more defense of the video. We’ll just have to disagree. 🙂

Please. Don’t bring up Youtube examples of who knows what event claiming to be a Catholic Mass. Or one actual event multiplied into a zillion through repostings.

As to the poster who claimed that there were pagan dances at the chrism Mass, until he calls the chancery and asks what was going on we have no reason to take his word for what happened.

We also can’t make statements that imply that all priests who celebrate the EF would never do anything wrong, but those OF priests are always game for some gross abuse of the liturgy. That is completely uncharitable.

No one posting on this thread has said that they hope the SSPX doesn’t come into full communion. What some have said is
  1. The SSPX should come into full communion for their OWN good; their souls are in jeopardy when they are away from Peter.
  2. When the SSPX are reconcilled, they will not instantly have a major impact all over the Church. They are relatively small and not everywhere.
  3. Just having an EF Mass is not enough to bring people back to a full practice of the faith. Whether or not the SSPX is reconcilled, other steps need to happen to help people know their faith.

You know what I predict? Mr. Casey is going to be closing threads and possibly putting a ban on discussing OF/EF Mass, since we have people that can’t seem to keep from making even subtle jabs:

Not saying you are one of them, I’m just sayin…all it takes is a look back over the past posts on this thread or just about any of them on the TC forum lately and you can find examples of what I’m talking about.

All very true.

You also won’t see them celebrating the OF either…you know, the form that 99%+ of Catholics across the world attend.

If you look at that then you have to assume that every priest has the authority to speak for their own fraternity and that it is not true. If it were true then you would have contradictions because there are some SSPX priests that discourage attendance to FSSP TLM and deny the validity of the OF. I think that the superior general is the only one that could and should speak for the fraternity.
No member of an institute has the authority to speak for his institute, except the superior general or his delegate.
To those who trivialize the importance of getting the SSPX back into full communion with Rome based on their relatively low numbers- I submit that the impact of having 570 highly traditional-minded priests and their congregations reunited with us may provide a spiritual impact greater than their numbers alone would suggest. In other words, that would be 570 priests guaranteed not to give us “clown masses” and “pagan faith dances” and other abominations.
How many priests give us clown masses? I have been around a very long time on three continents and many states withing the USA and have never seen a clown mass. I see the same ridiculous videos on YouTube. But YouTube can be replayed many times over to make it look like something is the daily bread. Don’t let that fool you. Count in your life time, how many you have personally seen.
Since you mentioned about accepting a diversity of tradition and practice, I wonder if any of them (SSPX or FSSP) are willing to concelebrate in a Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom? And if they do, just for kicks, the Byzantine Rite celebrant should put them on the far side of the table so they are facing the people :D:D:D
They’d have to be biritual
To be fair, I haven’t heard of any “clown masses” occurring in a while. But as a previous poster mentioned, pagan faith dances around the altar seem to be in vogue, and are just as sacrilegious, imho.
Pagan? Pagan is when it is dedicated to some non existent god. African, Papuans, and Indigenous peoples of the Amazon are allowed to have dances at their mass. They wear makeup and everything. This is to avoid looking like Europeans.

There are many more priests than there are ridiculous videos on youtube. Youtube also has some very good videos of very beautiful masses in the EF and OF.

Do you speak Portuguese? I do. This is not a mass. This is a celebration in honor of Our Lady of Aparecida. They’re using local folklore and customs to celebrate it. Actually, the words that the MC is speaking are very beautiful and theologically true. He said, “We owe a debt of gratitude to Mary. Were it not for her, the Word of God would not reach us.” That’s why the girl at the top of that thing is carrying the Bible. It’s not a lectionary.

It’s not my culture and I would not be very comfortable there. I can appreciate their effort to honor Our Lady with what to them is joyful and beautiful.
We do this every year on the Feast of St. Francis, all over the world. You should have seen the critters that I blessed last Thursday, among them a tarantula. Those things make me shiver. I’ll tell you, it was the fasted blessing I ever gave.

Fraternally,

Br. JR, FFV 🙂
