From what I have read…they also hold a slight risk of TSS (SEE LINK)

diva cups and keepers aren’t plastic so there is no threat of them breaking. they are good alternatives for women that can’t use tampons but don’t like to use pads.oh and I guess you can use yours till the plastic cracks and needs to be replaced
there are also cloth pads… same concept as using cloth diapers. I’ve never used them but am looking into them as I’m still post partum thanks to nursing (thank God for that!) I agree with the poster that said she could do without the period… so could I. I asked my mom about hysterectomies at 15.
I was about 16 when I used my first tampon. I played volleyball and with the sports shorts being the breathable material they were and how you’re down in the “serve receive” position (basic squat), I was very self conscious of bulkiness of the pad showing on my behind. Now pads are super thin… I also did it without permission from my mom as she didn’t want us using them. I also figured it out by using the instructions on the box.
It’s always good to look at the materials used in tampons and pads though. There are chemicals in them that help to make them super aborbant but super slim at the same time. And it’s those same chemicals that CAN cause you to bleed more, have heavier and more painful cramping. Lots of women that I know of that has made the switch either to the diva cup/ or keeper or cloth pads… they’ve mentioned their periods are shorter, less blood, and less cramping. Some that practice NFP have stated that they are able to read their signs better because it even helped with the background cervical mucus (by not using the pantiliners during ovulation time, but using cloth liners)
But I agree as the one poster said… to each their own. I’d suggest giving each alternative two cycles of a shot and see what you like the most and go with it.

I have an older catechism that discourages the use of tampons in young girls because it might encourage masturbation (not sure WHAT kind of tampons they had back then!)
I used them when I was 14 on, but after I had my first baby I can’t use them anymore, they are so uncomfortable. I think it depends on your daughter’s preference. I WOULD recommend using the ones with applicators, the other ones are hard to get in right if you are not practiced.

I was 11, no real instruction other than the information sheet that came with them. My 12 year old daughter has used them once for swimming but doesn’t use them full-time. I now choose to use pads. The modern ones are comfortable enough not to notice them at all. A big improvement over when I was a kid!
I hated the menstrual cup. After reading more widely, it seems to be about 50% love them and 50% hate them. If I’d known this then I don’t think I’d have tried it.
As for encouraging masturbation - last I knew they didn’t make tampons that were stimulating

I bought some on my own when I was about 14 to go swimming, but never liked them much and usually used pads.
**After the first baby, I never went back to tampons - can’t stand the things. **Not that I’m thrilled with pads either.
Frankly, I think there’s nothing like having a cycle to make a woman think on having another baby. And I don’t even have cramps or anything like some women do…
[dh is taking advantage of my holiday spirit to point out from behind me that he thinks I make up for it in hormones and that’s what gets him thinking on the next baby. snicker-snicker]
There’s no medical reason to encourage the girls to use tampons. Just leave them alone and if they feel a need or want to use them - they’ll let you know.
Oh and the diva is made of silicone, making it safer than latex or rubber based ones and easier to clean, imo. I have one around here somewhere and did like it better than tampons, but still went back to my pads.

Help us all (men)…with this threat. I have learned more here than in all my sex classes. Before I only had a vague idea about what tampons are…now I am an expert (among guys at least). I know precisely when, where and why.

But what if there are some other words ( in the mysterious female world) that I per chance come across? Just as innocently sounding like “tampon”, but you know…it is all for better. My husband has gone out to buy tampons for me on numerous occasions and in various uncomfortable circumstances. They aren’t a big deal to him.
