Tampon use?

My own story: My first period came when my family and family friends were on vacation at a lake. Not knowing any better, I put a pad in my swimming suit and went swimming. Lo and behold (and without my knowledge), the thing had swelled up and floated right out…past one of our family friend’s sons. HOW EMBARRASSING. :o

Of course, I didn’t claim it, but my mom had her suspicions!

here we go again!!! I am a swimmer, in YMCA with all sorts of women (including 12 years old) and in no way I would imagine that next to me, one of them could be swimming with a broken tampon…now, each time I swim, I will think of tampons, tampons now haunt me at night. HELP

You misunderstood… the poster wasn’t talking about a tampon in the water, but asking about a PAD in the water, which would be totally yucky. If you have ever seen a regular baby diaper enter a pool, they absorb water and totally break up, the diaper gets giant. The same thing would happen to a pad. Tampons are the only way to go when swimming. No fear of Tampons running rampant, but if a girl were to wear a pad in the water, that may be a problem.

I would venture to say you are relatively safe… however, anytime you are in a public pool you are taking a risk… you never know what you might find in that water!

Pools are cleaner than the ocean or a lake. becaise of chemical treatment. At least when someone vomits or defecates in a pool, it is usually seen and the pool can be chemically shocked.

I swam in Lake Erie when I was a kid, now that was a health risk!
This reminds me of one of my favorite scenes from Caddyshack…
 
I would encourage all of you with young daughters to explain about cycles, pads and tampons briefly and to keep a small supply of pads appropriate for a young girl (ie. smaller, thinner sizes) available from the time that they are around 7 or 8. (Grandma you can keep some supplies also if you will have little visitors who stay without their mothers.) With current nutrition girls are hitting puberty much earlier in some cases than previous generations. I know that no one wants to think of their “baby” growing up that soon, but I got a surprise first visit from “Aunt Minnie” while visiting my mother’s sister out-of-state at the age of nine! Thankfully, my mother had explained the basic cycle to me the previous year and I didn’t freak. However, my aunt did freak and had no pads available. She had not started until age eighteen, so she was totally not expecting this situation with a nine year old. Aarrrgh!! Talk about trauma for a young girl.

Also don’t skip the explanation of tampons because even a young girl may need to use them for protection from super heavy menses. Not to get too graphic but some people need both types of products at once to make it until their next class change on the heaviest day. I had killer cramps and such heavy menses from the beginning that I would actually get faint at times. Thankfully I got home to my mother after the initial trauma and she explained everything in detail in a matter of fact manner so that month number two proceeded without incident.

You can make them a small “emergency” kit with a change of undergarments and other supplies in a small bag that can be closed securely and kept in their school locker or the bottom of a book bag because most girls have unpredictable cycles at least for a while. No one wants to sit in the school nurse’s office with a borrowed sweater tied around their waist while waiting for Mom to bring clothes and things to school.
 
Very true, jc-servant. A friend of mine got hers for the first time when we were in third grade, I think about age 9. Neither of us had ever heard of such a thing! 🙂 She was scared and told her mom and she helped her and gave her the "talk"and then she came to school the next day just full of “information” :rolleyes: 😛 Later on though in seventh grade she would have the worst cycles. I remember her in the bathroom crying from the pain of cramps. And her periods would last for weeks on end. It got so bad she was put on the pill at 15. I often wondered if her getting her period so early had anything to do with her rough cycles.

Oh, and as for the OP question, I was I think in high school before I started using tampons, because that’s when I started getting them for myself - my mom always bought me pads prior to that so that’s what I used. I think she thought they were uncomfortable so she never got them for my sister and I. And I figured out the how to use part from the instructions that come in the box. Not much to it! 🙂 Good luck with your daughter.
 
OK People, First this has been an interesting thread, even I have never heard of the menstural cup. Thank you everyone for sharing your comments. Call me old fashion, but my concern is that tampons or any other object will break the Hymen. If it breaks the Hymen, there is no proof that a teen is not having sex. Please don’t give me a hard time. This is a real concern for me. The only thing that is suppose to break the Hymen is a penis. Preferably on a wedding night. If one wants to regard my thinking as a Catholic thing. I suppose t is, but not entirely. It’s also God’s natural law. I know that girls are suppose to save themselves for marriage. I know that in doing that. The girls Hymen would not be broken until her wedding night. So to me nothing is suppose to penetrate the vagina until then, and using tampons sooner or later will break the Hymen. Make sense?

I started my period JUST after I turned 12. My mom wouldn’t LET me use tampons because she was afraid I’d lose my virginity or something… I argued and argued, to the point that my VERY private Dad intervened and said, “If your Mother wants you to wait a year or two to wear those…those…tampoooons, then you need to obey her!!”. 😛

What I ended up doing was stealing my older sister’s to the point that my Mom relented eventually and bought me my own. I guess she was sick of my sister complaining. 😃

I learned on my own- just followed the directions.

As far as TSS, I had heavy periods and would use 2 supers at a time, and still have to change every few hours :eek:- but never had a problem with TSS.
 
I’ve never used them or even tried them. It’s always just been pads, which I hate enough. I absolutely hate having my period. It’s a mess, painful, and just awful. I know I would never be able to wear a tampon comfortably. I find any kind of penetration extremely painful, I would fear the toxic shock because I too don’t believe in slipping foreign objects inside, and I bleed so heavily I don’t even think it would keep me clean enough. I would get blood all over everything if I wasn’t protected by a pad. I don’t know how other girls and women can wear them without bleeding all over their clothes. When I’ve had my period, I can give up being in the swimming pool for one week.
