My daughter - 10 yo, has very long thick hair, however it is very tangly and my wife and myself have a hard time maintaining it.

We have tried a kids brand of no-tangle conditioner - it smells like pears, and a no tangle comb. The conditioner is useless, and the tangling comb works well, but 6 hours later it is tangled again.

Does anyone know of any products which are great for detangling hair and keeping it that way?

TIA

Hilary

Use a very good conditioner on her that has a lot of silicone in it. That gives hair more ‘slip’ so it doesn’t knot up nearly as much. Read ingredients and look for silicone near the top of the list.

I was a tangly haired child who was also VERY tender headed.

Johnson’s No More Tears, No More Tangles spray detangler worked for me.

Thanks for your advice. I’ll try the Johnson’s - but do you have a recommendation for the silicone conditioner?

TIA

I was told if you rinse your haur in cold water, that helps too :).

Try a good shampoo and conditioner. If that doesn’t work, get her hair cut shorter and have the stylist “thin out” her hair a bit. You could also ask the stylist what kind of product to use for the tangles. I’ve found that keeping my girls hair on the short side keeps it looking neater and less tangled. If she wants to keep it long, she should braid it every night so that it’s easier to brush in the morning. Oh, one other thing, I have this great paddle brush from Aveda. It’s great! Very gentle on the hair and nice on the scalp, even my tenderheaded girls will let me brush their hair with it and you can use in on wet hair without breaking or stretching the hair. Here it is: aveda.com/templates/products/product_search.tmpl?KEYWORDS=paddle+brush
I looked around before buying this one and couldn’t find one like it anywere else.

I have waistlength curly hair so I know ALOT about tangles! I use Pantene 60% Conditioner for Color-treated hair even though I don’t color my hair but it works great and penetrates deep into my hair leaving it nice and soft.

After I wash it out and squeeze the excess water out of my hair I then put V05 Frizz rescue and wrap a towel around my head. If her hair is shoulder length then 2 dime size blobs of this should be enough.

I don’t know what texture your daughter’s hair is since you didn’t mention it(curly, straight, wavy) but after leaving the towel on a few minutes I remove it and put some Dep #8 gel in my hair to enhance the curl and keep tangles to a minimum.

Anyways, the Pantene conditioner and V05 are great for tangles. Lastly, I would encourage your daughter to finger comb the underside of hair. This will prevent big tangles forming until it is time for you to comb her hair again.

Let us know how it goes with your daughter. 🙂 If you have any more questions don’t hesitate to ask!

Peace

One of my daughters has very long thick hair, although its very straight.

We use Dove sheer moisture therapy (its a spritz). We douse the snarls and they comb right out. When we comb it out we comb it in sections and tie those off as we go. We also use a deep conditioner (dove or Pantene, the kind you leave on for 5 min) once a week.

We also **insist **that she wear her hair in braids or ponytails etc. even when she sleeps. This goes a long way in keeping her hair snarl free, probably better than any product you can put on it.

Go to the nearest tack shop. That’s right - the place that sells stuff to horsemen. One of the most difficult things to untangle is a horse’s tail. There is a shampoo and conditioner called “Mane and Tail” that we always used. You can sometimes find it in drug stores as well. It is not harmful to humans. I know many people have used it to solve the hair tangle problem.

I second the Mane and Tail as a conditioner. We can get it at our local feed store and it makes hair very shiny and soft.

My ten year old has the thickest hair ever! It’s so thick and she hates to brush it and take care of it. I use the Pantene Ice Shine conditioner for her hair. It keeps it well maintained

My hair is to the middle of my back and I can’t even get a comb through it if I don’t use the right products.

Any shampoo is fine really - it’s the conditioner and after products that make the differnce.

Conditioner: Go to Sally Beauty Supply or some place that sells to the trade. If they sell L’Oreal hair color, look for the big tube of Ferria conditioner - it is AMAZING!!!

Detangler: Dove Smooth & Soft Antifrizz Cream It is the best product I’ve ever found that leaves my hair soft and not tangled, and not sticky or over coated.

Infusium 23 to comb out the tangles and then a product with silicone in it (only use a little amount, lik 1/4 of what you think you would need)

Stay away from Pantene it causes horrible buildup. As any hair dresser.

I had a lot of trouble with my hair growing up. i was in tears very often. Cutting her hair shorter, will help her learn to take care of it, so when it gradually grows, she will be getting gradually better at it. Also, if her is thick and wavy or curly, (mine is wavy, so this works for me- i can’t really speak for kinky curls) try one of those straightening irons that are for wet hair (no heed for blow-drying). That way two good things come from it: 1) no need to blow-dry, which for me causes more tangles, and broken hairs and frizz which contribute to tangles and 2) hair that is already straight ad untangled won’t tangle as badly when wet to shampoo again. if i don’t straighten my hair, the next time i shampoo, it takes almost twice as long. it’s a cycle in a way.

And when brushing her hair, she should begin at the bottom few inches, then brush from higher and higher up. brushing tangled hair down from the scalp only makes it worse. And when it’s wet, use a comb with big teeth that are wide apart.

since she is ten, it sounds like her mom is still helping her care for her hair, but she is learning (or will soon be learning) to do it herself. which is why i feel that although long hair is very nice, (i’m assuming it’s on the longer side?) you can’t expect her to be able to suddenly manage long hair by herself. she should start with a shorter cut, and learn how to manage her hair, as it gets longer and mroe involved, she will be getting better at it. if her hair is very long, you can encourage her to donate her pony tail to locks of love www.locksoflove.org i have done this three times so far. that would make cutting her hair a positive thing for her, and perhaps even a lesson in Christian charity, since she would be doing something to benefit others who don’t have what she has. (yea, hair is not the same as money or food, but for a little girl, it’s something she has herself, that she herself can give. sorry this was so long. hope it helped a bit.

I have extremely thick, curly hair and I have found that the hair moisturizing products marketed to African-Americans work beautifully.
My 8yo daughter also has tangly hair and I find that if I don’t let her hair dry naturally it helps with the tangles some. And keeping it put up in some kind of ‘do’ helps also.

Once it is detangled, you might want to consider braiding it. That helps to keep the tangels out.

My daughter has SUPER curly beautiful hair. It isn’t thick yet…she’s only 2. But tangly is not a strong enough word ans she is our ‘delicate flower’ so we try to be as soft as possible.

I found Aussie Calming milk. I comes in a small bottle with a pump. It smells great & isn’t greasy or sticky.

Another product we’ve used is Curls Rock…I THINK it’s Bed Head. It also works as a gel to control the curl and the frizz.

Good luck and be sure to tell us how it turns out!

My hair loves to do that – long and wiry and wavy at the ends is just a recipe for pain. Oddly enough, running straightening gel (the cheap Tresemme stuff, no less) through it between showering and brushing seems to work wonders.

Here is a picture of my daughter’s hair.

As you can see it is wavy at the ends. I’ll try braiding it.

I normally do the brushing after a shower as I shower the kids on Saturday morning when my wife is out doing grocery shopping then.

My wife’s and youngest daughter’s hair is very thin, so she does not have these problems.

Thanks for all of your tips. I’ll try the conditioners:)
