The lesson we learned about sticking with school, even if we hate it, to get the diploma is going to help us to know that we CAN stick with something until it is finished.
School should be able to form individuals better during those 12 years than just that.

Good post. It’s like the joke:

Q. What do they call the person who graduates last in the class at medical school?
A. Doctor.

If Marx had had my employees he’d have been a capitalist.
I highly doubt it. Marx was so blinded by his historical materialism that he would have interpreted any such experience as just further evidence of his theory.

Marx wrote pretty positively of capitalism. In times of scarcity it’s an effective and relatively just way to allocate resources. The problem is after industrialization we no longer live in a time of scarcity, and that’s where the injustices that Marx both observed and predicted come from.

Does that hourly compensation measure account for changes in income taxes, benefits, and other increases in labour costs, or is it just comparing nominal hourly wage with nominal hourly wage?

I won’t disagree with you.

However, when all mention of “God” is forbidden and religious practices and disciplines are not allowed to be mentioned for fear of offending others who don’t practice those religions, it’s rather difficult to form individuals. Human beings are not just body and mind, but spirit and soul, and to ignore that, and in many cases, deny it or even denigrate it, dooms the efforts to help human children become fully formed.

And also, one might argue that it is the job of the parents and the extended family to help a child grow up to be a fully-functioning adult. Sadly, many children don’t enjoy the benefits of a two-parent home with extended family.

High cost of living is often a self-imposed problem. Its not just the fancy new car and the credit card debt, its also the expensive data plan on your phone, the cable subscription, the fast food, the weekly movie tickets, the organic grass fed steak, and all the other little things that add up.

True. Many of the costs you mention did not exist 20 or so years ago.

Are you factoring in all the potential McDonald’s customers who also get raises when the minimum wage goes up and now have more money to spend in the restaurant?
For a time, and then their restaurant spending drastically declines when their health care costs skyrocket because of increased consumption of McDonald’s.
