I had one tatoo when I joined the Catholic faith and I just recently got a second one. Neither are immoral or sexual or anything like that. The newest one is a Trinity cross with Rosary beads tangled through it. It has a sacramental value for me as everytime I see it, it reminds me of my commitment to the Church, to God, and to life (all life). It reminds me to pray the Rosary more often and to pray (period) more often. I consider it a work of art as well because it is an original piece by the artist. I find great beauty in the art form and I find great comfort & peacefulness in my cross tatoo specifically. Don’t judge me - let God do that when I get to heaven. See you there!

now this is just absurd you have never spent $100 on yourself? are you telling me you live essentially the life of a poor hermit and put all your to feeding the poor? if not this statement is nonsensical because that can be said for anything you have ever spent money on…

i obviously have tattoos, i’m not a jew so i feel no obligation to follow levitical laws which were given to the hebrews a long time ago. i have a memorial tattoo of mary for my son, a few celtic symbols on my arms i got from my visit to newgrange, a marine eagle globe and anchor, and stars on my right forearm. i like them well enough never regretted them.
absurd? maybe that’s why it’s difficult for the rich to enter the kingdom of Heaven, so many we shouldn’t be spending 100s of bucks on things that we don’t need. especially if the intent behind it isn’t to glorify God in any way. I think only the person spending that money can decide for themselves if the intent behind it is worth it or not, looking inside themselves…but i do think that it is a superficial thing, personally. have you seen the pulitzer prize winning picture or this kid and the cow?

do you still think it’s absurd to consider giving the money to people like this? Or maybe one can get a tattoo, but donate double the amount to a reputable charity?

Oh yes, someone’s actually played the Starving African Children Card.
If giving to charity could solve the problem of poverty and world hunger then why hasn’t it? Not everyone’s a selfish rich bastard (heck only a few are elite enough to be called that) so quit using them as an excuse or trying to make people feel guilty by equating us to them. Remember, a lot of people work for their money and you should think twice before condemning them for enjoying the fruits of their labor.

If you want to go save those starving children then buy a ticket and move there. Meanwhile, the rest of us have our own lives to live and I refuse to believe that I’ll be held accountable at St. Peter’s Gates just because I chose not to be stupid enough to jump into activism like an emotionally swayed hippie.

You see poverty is not something you could solve just by giving money (or worse trying to make people feel guilty into giving it). It’s a problem that needs political reform, macro economic improvement, and proper management. You really think the person that has what it takes to pull something like that off could be just anybody?

My country may not be as poor as Africa but it’s still pretty much a Third World backwater nation in certain parts. I see beggars on the streets frequently and displaced indigenous dangerously risking their lives running in between cars begging money from windows. You wanna know why I don’t do much about it? Answer: I can’t.

Wake up to reality. Sure I would encourage giving money to charity (assuming said charity has integrity) but don’t think it’s going to be the main factor in solving the world’s problems.

This is the" let someone else work toward alleviating the problem" mentality.
I can see how you can indulge in one tattoo for pleasure and vanity sakes. But obviously the Lord has allowed you to have money to spare and to be put to good use.
True, maybe some of us do not want or cannot be in public office and have decision making capacity to solve the economic problems of the world, but most of us, especially if you have several hundred dollars for tattoos, can send $20 monthy to feed 1 hungry child. Try World Vision, or Feed the Children.
I have been donating to WV for many years, and I have the picture of the baby I fed,and I have the picture of the well fed teen he is now.
You can enjoy looking at your tattoos, while others look at their pictures of children saved.

And it’s a fine mentality it is. Plenty times it’s kept me from going down the path of a naive left winger. Me and my family have every right to decide how to spend our money without activists trying to make us feel guilty. Frankly, it’s insulting. I can’t blame the hungry children themselves but I certainly don’t like getting the feeling that my money is only needed because the idiotic governments of these nations aren’t spending enough money for them. Personally, I’m not one to pick up someone else’ slack. A nation that depends on others will always be a sad nation indeed.

You want to accuse someone of extravagance? You can pay a visit to Malacanang Palace over here. Tell them to stop wasting taxpayer money on pork barrel.

P.S.

In case you’ve forgotten, I don’t have tattoos. I’m just one that likes to have one on every once in a while.

Furthermore, I am hardly an impulse buyer and I definitely do what I can to stop spending too much and save my money for something else in the future. Giving to charity is a personal thing. If you find joy in spending your money on them and have no problems with being used as a scapegoat for lazy politicians or the fact that what you’re doing is as effective as a bee sting hitting a giant then be my guest. Just quit looking down on people who wanna be wise enough to think twice about what to do with the fruits of their labor.

Sorry if I gave you the impression that I was looking down on you.I just have a hard time understanding the reasoning behind your" looking twice how you spend the fruit of your labor" and concluding the best use is to tattoo yourself.
Gorgive me if I offended you.We are just exchanging ideas.(I believe you called me hippie and several other things in your post)So lets be friends.

People wear rose tinted glasses, close their eyes, and refuse to accept that they could make a difference to these people. I was brought up in the u.s. but i’m currently at a university in india. i see many beggars and i don’t encourage them because most don’t work hard to feed themselves. my sister is smart about it…she’ll see a leper and buy him food. should she just say it’s the politicians problem? what can that man do for dinner that night? i don’t give money to begging children because they won’t learn to work hard and it just encourages em to take money for granted. but adopting a child financially seeing that they get an education is something i would do once i start earning. i do spend on myself of course, don’t get me wrong. but i see that i do my part too. as far as “looking down” on other people…i don’t, and i don’t want to judge. stop putting words in my mouth. my post was just in response to someone who thought the idea was absurd to donate money- i’m not saying donate every cent and spend nothing on yourself. i’m not playing any “africa card”. please grow up.

And you’re not putting words in that other person’s mouth? It wasn’t calling donating absurd. It was countering one’s post regarding how foolish it was to avoid spending money on yourself. Read it again before you start pointing fingers.

And for goodness sakes, your post is clearly trying to induce a guilt trip. (“maybe that’s why it’s difficult for the rich to enter the kingdom of Heaven”? Who are you trying to fool?) Plus you posted pictures of malnourished children. Get some experience. I see that tactic all the time used by socialist hippies. That’s the Africa Card and you just played it. Face it.

Where did I say the best use? There is no “best” use of your money. The choices on what to spend on are either just better or worse and it all depends on circumstances and how you use your head.

The logic is quite simple really. I worked hard for my money, not them. I decide what to spend it on. People who say things like the rich have a hard time entering the kingdom of heaven sound dangerously like the communists trying to use Christianity as a means of luring us into their “Spread the wealth” way of thinking.

And for the record? I didn’t call anyone a hippie. I was making a comparison, a simile if you will.

yeah hey you’re right, babalu did have a point. i was just hung up on the fact that he connected the idea of donating money instead of getting a tattoo with the word absurd. which wasn’t what his post was about.

but lol i’m trying to induce a guilt trip? 🤷 so sue me.

If you consider that a tattoo enhances your looks, would you tattoo your face?😃

What you propose is illogical.I could not see with something covering my eyes, and
a head is to small to hold a dress.A pair of pants or dress are not meant to be used in the face.
My proposition is different. Why couln’t you have a tattoo in your cheek for example?Or forehead,or nose?::shrug:Don’t children have their faces painted at fairs and parties?

Well in that case, facial tattoos also have beauty potential. I’ve seen a lot of cool looking characters with facial tattoos.

You could have a boat on one cheek and a light house on the other.Sort of a place of destination going through your nose.:extrahappy:
:rotfl:

I am having a little fun here,do not wish to be mean, just trying to lighten up the subject.

Or you could get a cursed one that lets you see demons like this guy.

Like all other controversial subjects, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. So can we agree to disagree on yet one more topic?

I am not asking anyone here to get a tattoo. I am not even asking what you think of mine. The initial question was answered - it is not against the moral teachings of the Catholic faith to have a tattoo. Glad that’s settled.

Now can we resume being loving Catholics and stop being so judgmental. Last I knew you were not my creator, the Pope, my priest, or even my mother.

Peace be with you all.

I got a huge tat of Our Lady Of Guadeloupe. I thought it was a good idea at the time but now I’m thinking what if I die? Then Our Lady on my arm will decompose, and I don’t like that idea…Screw-

Leviticus 19:28 “Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the Lord.”

The Old Testament also condemns us for shaving.
I don’t know about you but I kind of like my face smooth and bishie looking. 😛
