Tattooing is a personal option. I don’t think you have to justify your reasons for having/not having a tattoo to anyone. God knows the true intention of your heart, and his judgement is the only one that truly matters! We shouldn’t bicker over these minor details that cause us to detach from more important messages that God gave us e.g. to love all people and not to judge others.
My personal opnion is that tattoos are not for
me. It is not based on Lev 19: 28 but rather because I believe it will not benefit me spiritually. For me, there are more important ways of portraying/declaring/maintaining a spiritual life; such as living by example. ‘Doing good things’ I think is a better way of showing your love for God than a tattoo that says “I love God”. As for getting a tattoo for the sake of reminding oneself to live a life for God, I think that if reminding yourself was the reasoning - why not carry a bible with you always? Or rosary beads? Some may argue that they need a permanent reminder; but think about this, do you need a picture of God to know that He exists?
These are just my personal reasons for not getting a tattoo and are not implied to offend anyone. I have a feeling God’s criteria for getting into heaven isn’t as straight forward as confirming ‘Are you tattooed or not?’
