Taylor Swift?

My 13 yr old daughter loves Taylor Swift. I hear nothing wrong with her lyrics and trust me I’ve heard them many times.🙂 My children listen to all types of music including classical and show tunes and enjoy it. But they also like Christian rock. One of the their favorite groups is Popple, a Catholic Band. Listening to pop music doesn’t necessarily mean someone has poor taste in music.
There was a Taylor Swift concert in my town some weeks ago, and I was talking with a friend’s daughter about it. She is in 8th Grade. She said the arena was filled with grade school girls and their moms! Hardly any boys. But she loved the concert.

Taylor is a great choice for an 8 year old to listen to. Not only are her lyrics clean, she writes most of her music herself. She’s a great example of someone that really has worked for her success and has pretty much stayed true to herself instead of being made over into a “sex symbol”.

I think taylor swift is perfectly acceptable. Nothing to vulgar (yet) and hopefully it will stay that way! Mostly love, boyfriend, holding hands type talk. She is fairly modest in dress for the most part (usually cute dresses that i would wear with a cardigan actually) so i think she could be a pretty decent role model. If your daughter likes this she might like Carrie Underwood too (pop/country as well) who has some pretty decent lyrics (haven’t read them all but I have the cd and i havent heard anything bad yet…).

But, keep an eye on new albums and check before you give them the thumbs up. As she ages she may move the ‘britney’ direction… although I hope she doesn’t.

just my 2 cents. good luck!

Both her Taylor Swift album and Fearless album should be fine . Nothing that makes me uncomfortable and what not [and that isn’t hard]. I prefer the Taylor Swift album, I think, as far as for little children go [And I’ve listened to both all the way through numerous times].

You are actually comparing Taylor Swift to a gateway drug.
Not really, sorry.

Chemical addiction is a whole different animal, but I see why you drew the parallel.

Its not that the person will ‘need’ TS to function healthily (or her body will go into withdrawal), its just that she will become naturally interested in other bands and singers on the ‘music scene’. That’s how people make friends–we generally dress like our fav singers, and have friends who are into the same music. At least as teenagers.

I don’t think that this is a radical suggestion. I don’t dislike TS, I’m just saying–if you’re going to broaden her horizons, do it now. She has all the time in the world to listen to ‘radio music’.

I don’t know what music you’re listen to, but I sure don’t have anything like that on my iPod. Sorry, but I’d be bored to tears working out to Mozart or Christian hymns. If that means I have bad taste, so be it. I’d rather have bad taste than listen to Disney music all day.

Seriously, I’d love to know what world everyone else is living in, because it sure ain’t mine. I never hear any of this sexed-up music people say is all over the radio. Maybe I just have a good station. My friend’s don’t listen to it, I never hear it on TV. Been listening to the radio in the background all day for years while I work, yet I never hear any of the music so many Christians seem to fear for their lives about.

OP, let your kid listen to Taylor Swift. Trust me; she’s not going to be humping and grinding at a school dance from that, and it’s not some slippery slope to mortal sin either.
Honestly, if you’ve never heard sexed up drug music on the radio, I think that we should ask what world you’re living in. Maintaining good values in suburbs/cities is a challenge.

Now, I’m not saying that everyone from Kansas by definition live in a 1950’s wholesome countryside, but geographic differences are important to consider. For you, TS is might be just another Bible-believing country girl. For us, she is just another pop singer/the only country artist on our IPods.

Not to bash TS, I just thought it would be nice to have a critical opinion every once and a while. 😛

Wow, I am a total square. I have an 8 yo and I don’t think she’s ever heard of Taylor Swift. I don’t have anything against the girl and really no opinion of her music, but I just think 8 is a little young even if the music is clean it’s still all about dating. Am I totally crazy?

I’m not going to freak if she hears the songs but I wouldn’t buy it for her. Just my opinion.

P.S. she knows who Hannah Montanna is but only from school. We don’t have cable so she’s never seen it and again, I wouldn’t buy it.

I think there are important things to note, for the OP. Here is another mother who thinks her daughter is too young, which I agree: 8yo is a little young to understand about pop music, songs about relationships, etc. Its odd that she would even be interested.

So you ask, where is OP’s daughter getting her interest from? Other girls at school? A great way to get your daughter to be the girl who follows all the crowds and ends up in some questionable situations, is to enable her to blend in and assimilate with the ‘in’ crowd.

Taylor’s one of the better songwriters right now. Nothing wrong with her music. I saw her in concert not long ago, she puts on a good show.

I don’t know about the OP, but our family listens to a lot of music, the radio is on almost constantly in the house. Mostly country music, so she knew Taylor that way. And Taylor Swift is not what the kids are into at my daughter’s school, never really was. Its Lady Gaga and Keisha, and stuff like that.

I personally think it’s unrealistic to expect children and teenagers to never listen to pop music. Unless they are homeschooled and only exposed to other children and teenagers with the same upbringing, they will hear pop music, and most of them will come to like it. Most of them will develop crushes on various pop artists and this is perfectly normal and healthy, as it prepares a child to love a real man or woman someday.

IMO, the child or teenager who is most likely to like all kinds of music is the child or teenager who is actually a musician themselves.

I play piano, and I work with a lot of the most artistic, musical children and teenagers in our city. Several of them are professional singers/actors with various theaters in the Chicago area. These kids are quite knowledgeable about music from all genres. Many play piano or another instruments, and many are fans of opera, classical music, sacred music (many earn money singing in various churches and at weddings and funerals), etc.

But they also like pop music and other modern genres, including rock, R & B, jazz, rap, hip hop, and even the rauchier stuff. Many like various ethnic music genres, especially Indian and African. Some like CW, especially crossover artists like Taylor Swift. Only a few like hardcore country (Clint Black, Alan Jackson, Randy Travis, etc.) Only a few (very few) like CCM (Contemporary Christian Music).

I think it’s very possible for kids and grownups to like or at least appreciate all genres of music because I see it all the time with artistic kids.

So my suggestion to the OP is that if you want your chld to appreciate all kinds of music, get her into piano lessons, or lessons on another instruments that requires exposure to a classical repertoire. And make sure she is involved with musical theater, either as a performer or a techie.

Personally, I refuse to date any woman who listens to Taylor Swift. They usually turn out to be drama queens or flakes. Taylor Swift is bad news.

And if you don’t force her it still dosn’t mean that she will be completely brainless. Kids are pretty flexible. And they will develop their own intersts independent of what their parents think. Again I was raised on hard rock and stoner music. I find it annoying.

I know others who were raised and like the music they were raised with or hate it. A parent will not ruin their child because they let them listen to pop music.

Yes. Of course. Becuase your ideas about women have been SO sucesful so far.

you just have some very strange ideas about women and dating. I’m suggesting the OP be very wary of your advice as you really seem to have no idea about women
Normally, I would just away from flame bait like this, but here is my attempt at having a real discussion, anyway.

First of all, Taylor Swift is young, and her music caters to teenage girls. The themes tend to be related to all the drama that teenage girls go through in high school or whatever. This is not the type of music that mature women should be listening to. If a woman - yes, woman, not girl - is interested in these immature themes, she is herself likely very immature. This is not the type of women that I’m interested in dating.

I hope that clears it up for you.

Did you read the beginning of the thread? AT ALL? This is a mother planning a birthday party for her EIGHT year old. Acting like love of Taylor Swift creates a person incapable of entering into a solvent marriage is ludicrous.

Suggesting that a grown adult shouldn’t listen to any music is just so controlling and repressive it’s insane. I get WERS radio. After their spectacular acappela program they have a wonderful sunday and saturday afternoon program called “The playground” Music for the young and young at heart…They play Disney, wee sing, raffy, and others including taylor swift.

I know many grown women (no men though) in successful relationships and marriages who love this station. Those married who now have children share it with them.

And with all your hang ups I doubt there are very many women you are “intrested in dating”

Hmmm, wonder what that says about me and my husband that happen to find Taylor Swift’s music entertaining.

I don’t even know who Taylor Swift is, but how dare you enjoy music that someone else says is, “immature”!

By the way, I’m kidding-😛
