Sigh. Who knows what happens in public schools? One minute they are telling how many students are behind the norms, the next showing these fabulous pictures of everyone having fun, the next we hear of students killing themselves or others because of bullying, then we hear how al the children are above average…

The quality of public schools vary. When someone has a family and is looking to purchase a new house the quality of the schools available to that area is often one of the considerations behind whether or not a house is acceptable. My sister purchased her house in the county that she did because she liked the schools there; the family takes education seriously and the school offered advanced education courses that are of benefit to him. But if I were to drive the distance from my house the where they live in a northern direction I’d find myself in a school system that is underfunded and several teachers were fired for a test cheating scandal some years back.

IOW, the teacher’s responses are basically: out of the millions of classrooms in the US, mine does not look like that, so DeVos should be kicked out of office.

I agree. I have plenty of critical thins to say about DeVos, buut this tweet is not among my concerns. I’m more inclined to view these responses as an opportunity to express ones disposition to her that was formed from other things.

Most classes still are set up that way, though there is often group work interjecting during the lesson. And obviously all classes are not uniform, some will look very different.

Does anyone here have ny data on how much classroom restructuring and pedagogical transformation has gone on over the past couple of decades? Is there good data on what are classrooms really look like and how they really work?

Yes, there is research but the shift hasn’t been uniform, even within the same class it’s all over the place depending on the content being taught.
There has been a definite push towards more student activity, group work, etc but the actually set up hasn’t needed to shift from my observations. The students move seats or move their tables to accommodate.
I’d say devos was not completely wrong, and since she was pushing for more progress faster, she referenced more of a stereotype to illustrate her point. A common tactic among speakers.
The stock photo definitely does look like many current classrooms.

A common tactic that any good teacher would call out.
And not a particularly effective one: treating the vital agents of change as thought they are the problem is not a good leadership approach.

It was a tweet, and if you bothered to read it, it was accurate for the schools I spend time in, and that’s in a progressive school system. Teachers are constantly fighting to make the bolded text happen in their classes, at least for the instructional portion of the lesson.

As for her performance, it can be no worse than Arne Duncan, who was simply dreadful.

We had been stuck with the Devos family here in Michigan for several decades now, and they shouldn’t even be trusted to even take out the garbage. Why would anyone in their right mind pick for the DoE someone who doesn’t even want public education? Oh, wait a minute-- I forgot who’s president.

Largely true here too, especially in Catholic schools.
But truthfully, I would like to take issue with DeVos if she’s saying the arrangement pictured is somehow a bad arrangement.

I can’t believe some of the photos people posted in the article showing what a classroom looks like in 2018. One of them had the teacher reading and half the kids not paying attention. Not sure what point they were trying to make with that one?
