D: “Yes, we Mormons are a strange lot; say, what’s that thing underneath your shirt?”
N: “Oh, this? It’s a scapular; it’s a facsimile of the monastic hair shirt, and it’s supposed to irritate the skin and remind you not to sin throughout the day. The plastic cover is great – it’s almost like perpetual flagellation! You’re never supposed to take it off, even when sleeping or… well, you’re never supposed to take it off.”
D: “No, I mean the other thing.”
N: "Oh, that’s a cornicello. It’s an Italian amulet in the shape of a bull’s horn that’s sacred to the moon goddess and is used to ward off the ‘mallocchio’ (evil eye). I wear it next to my crucifix.
